"L?" Light looked at me, his eyes carried a confused look as if he has never heard it before.
"Mhm, does it ring a bell?" I asked, sitting beside him while he sits up on his bed.
"Mmm, no, I don't think so. Is it someone I know?"
"Kind of crazy that you're asking me if you know someone" I let out a soft and short laugh. "But no, maybe you don't..He used to be the lead detective in the Kira case so I thought it would help if you knew about it - 'cause you know, it's related to Kira; but he's dead, just found out today.." I mumbled to myself, failing to notice the expression Light had after I revealed to him that L was dead.
"L..is dead?" Light's eyes turned cold, but in the subtlest way possible. It was happening again, I have found one of his memory triggers and I had to keep going.
"Yes, he's no longer here. I heard that he was killed by.. Kira" I wasn't entirely sure if that was true but I just needed something to help him dig deeper into this.
"Kira killed L? Impossible.." He responded, not making eye contact, he had a lifeless expression painted all over his face. I couldn't understand what was making him react like this.
"Why would it be impossible, Light?"
"Because I'm..-"
"Y/N, you're being paged! Come right away" The door banged open, creating a huge noise that startled both Light and I.
No! Daiki always finds a way to ruin things for me. I sensed that Light was about to say something incredibly helpful.. and he comes barging in.
"Ah, looks like you're being called, see you later, Y/N." He smiled, as if snapping out from hypnosis. "Ah, my head hurts. Were we talking about the Kira case again? hearing his name gives me a migraine." He pouted as a joke, rubbing his head gently as he waves goodbye.
Does he not remember? Was his brain not working very well at that moment? Ugh, I can't believe this. I just know that if we tried a little more, he could have recovered some of his memories.
...
"I think you're aware of the reason why I called you, no?" Daiki had his hands in his pockets, glaring at me with a clear irritated look.
"Is it not to assist with a medical emergency?"
"Are you playing dumb with me right now? Y/N, do I look like I wanna play games with you?" He raised his voice, alerting a few nurses who happened to walk by.
"I'm sorry, what's going on?" I flinched a little bit after hearing his words.
"You should be. What do you think you're doing? I specifically instructed that you don't ask the patient personal questions and yet here you are, bombarding him with all the kira information to try and get something out of it"
"What? No, I'm just trying to help him. Every time I mention kira or anything related, he remembers something from his past. I figu-
"Just stop it, Y/N. You have disobeyed half of what I told you, how can you be so reckless? This is my final warning to you, let him heal in his own way and stop with the mind games that involve a mass murderer, all right?" He angrily walked away, rubbing his head as if it's going to make him feel better.
Was he right? Was I being too reckless; Am I doing this for Light or for my own amusement? I have never encountered a patient like him and for the first time, I had the motivation to go to work. Caring for him didn't seem like a task and I always learn something new about him that shocked me every day.
"I should stop.." I whispered to myself as I bury my face into my arms as I sat down on a bench in front of his room.
"stop what, are you alright?" Light responded. He was right in front of me, he had this smile on his face that would remove all my worries in an instant.
"Uh, Light, hey. I thought you were sleeping" I raise my head from my position and faced him, looking up and directly into his eyes and back down as I sighed from my current situation.
"Sleeping for twelve hours a day is too much even for me. So, are you going to tell me what's going on?"
"Mmm, I don't think I want to..but do I really have a choice?" I smiled, turning my head to face him while he sat beside me.
"No, you don't. I'm going to comfort you and listen to whatever it is that's bothering you. Kind of like a free therapist"
"Well, it's your choice, fine." I playfully rolled my eyes, ending it with a smile. I inhaled deeply before telling him anything. "I just feel like I've done nothing but harm you ever since the first day we met. I've disobeyed Doc's orders multiple times and the thing is, I used to not care about anything this much to break a command but maybe I've been using the excuse to help you so I could somehow find my purpose in this hospital..-I know it sounds cra-
"Crazy? Not at all. I don't fully understand how you feel but I know you never meant to harm me in any way. You're good, don't be so hard on yourself. I'm the one who fell on concrete ground yet you're the one who has this depressed look on your face, cheer up"
He sure knows what to say, huh.
"Thanks. It's ironic that you're paying me to cry in front of you." I joked.
"That makes me sound like a pervert, you know" He responded, his head tilted to the side. I laughed and lightly punch his arm.
"Anyways, I will quit it with the Kira stuff. We'll just wait for your gunshot wound and other injuries to heal and your memories to naturally or hopefully recover and I'll be here 'till that happens" I smiled.
