Lennie's POVJosh had a surprise date for me. It was our one year, it didn't feel like it at all. I could've sworn it had only been 3 months.
He had this elaborate plan for the day, me not having any idea of what it was. I insisted that we both contributed, took each other out, but he would not budge. He told me to dress up, but not too much. I trusted him, of course, but I was still nervous for what was awaiting me.
"Are you ever going to tell me?" I begged again, only about 10 minutes into our trip.
"Nope." He said, popping the 'p.' I dramatically let my head fall against the headrest. "I promise, you'll love it. Just enjoy the scenery, and we'll be there before you know it."
"Josh, you know this is excruciating, imagine if I did this to you."
"I'm sorry, darling, I can't tell you until we get there." He shrugged, not giving any further details. All he did was grab my hand, pulling it to the center console. He did this nearly every time he drove us. He held my hand with his right, his left on the wheel. It was so sweet, he made sure to do it at some point no matter where we were going.
"Are we almost there?" I asked after half an hour, only growing more and more curious as to where we were going.
"Len, I'm not sure if you'd even know the town if I told you the name." He smiled, knowing I wasn't familiar with Michigan towns yet.
"You're right." I said. "But, like are we at least halfway there?"
"A little over half." He said. Well, that was something. That was the most he had said about our mystery destination.
"Our first spot." He said. "Because you are always talking about needing new books, despite having a stocked bookshelf."
"No way." I smiled. "This place is so cute."
"I figured you'd like it." He smiled. I couldn't help but give him a kiss, not knowing how else to thank him.
"Let's go." He smiled, grabbing my hand. He led the way into the store, the infamous book aroma meeting us as the door opened.
"Are we picking each other a book out, or something like that?" I asked.
"We can." He shrugged.
"What was your original plan?" I asked, making sure I didn't accidentally shove out his idea.
"I actually wasn't sure on this part, I just thought I'd buy you a few books." He said.
"How about we each get each other one, that way we both get a little surprise?"
"Sounds good to me." He smiled. We split up, I wasn't sure what to get him. I had ideas, but I also didn't want to get him something he wouldn't enjoy.
Occasionally, we would run into each other, quickly darting behind an aisle before we saw the book the other chose. It kept happening too, Josh giggled every time.
I was only going to get him one book, but I found another one that he might've liked. And, I could borrow it when he wasn't reading it.
We checked out separately, planning to reveal each others books when we left. I was waiting outside on the bench when Josh finally joined me.
"Hello." He greeted, obviously excited to show me the book. We prepared to give each other a book, excited to see the results.
"I know we were only supposed to get one, but I ended up getting you two." Josh said.
"Well, that works out perfectly, because I also got you two books." I said. He made a funny face at the coincidence.
"Ready?" I asked, eager to see the books he got me.
