Chapter 7

It's been about 2 days, and everything was going well.......it felt nice to sleep on a bed and have clean clothes and fresh food. And protection from biters. should i even call them that? one was lucy, her face, her voice but somehow not her.  i watched it happen, still i want to believe it's not them. but it is. tears form in my eyes as i think about it, my sister......what if she turned.

My mother didn't tell us, but I'm going to guess she did; why else would she be so scared? I know I should hope for the best, but this life is new. Being outside the walls is new enough; this isn't how I dreamed it would be. It's not that I dreamed of being outside the walls, I just wanted to know what exactly happened and why we couldn't talk about it. I think about how the world used to be before the walls; it was wonderful, the books I read, the things I learned. I wonder why we stopped all those things—concerts, shows, movies, dancing, music. My world is not like that. We aren't allowed to go against the rules; we have no freedom. We just follow the rules and keep walking.

I grabbed some soup and water for my mom; things weren't going well with her. She didn't talk, and I barely got her to eat, I was pulled out of my thoughts when Ryder approached me.

"Hey, um, nice to see you again," Ryder smirked, the jerk... I was still sad about my sister, but I put on a happy face and gave him a soft smile.

"Nice to see you too, Ryder," I say, rolling my eyes, still annoyed by the nickname he's chosen for me.

"Well, that wasn't very convincing," he smirks, walking beside me.

"Can you read me that easily?" I ask, rolling my eyes again and sighing, which seems to amuse him.

This is the first time a guy has made an effort to talk to me, I mean guys always came up to me but the moment I made a fool of myself, they were quick to leave and never be found again.

"Is there something you need, or do you just enjoy stalking people?" I inquire, prompting a deep chuckle from him. I try to hide my blush by busying myself with pouring soup into a bowl.

"I certainly enjoy stalking you," he admits, making me laugh a little as we exchange a glance before I look away again, struggling to maintain eye contact. "But I did need something."

"Are you busy tonight?" he asks, causing me to roll my eyes once more.

"Yes very, so sorry" i say sarcastically making him chuckle. once again making me look away, i placed the bowl down and grabbed a water bottle, i was very thirsty, and i needed to calm my nerves.

"I want to show you something" he said. making me choke a bit on my water, but i covered it up, by clearing my throat.

"That's too bad, I'm super busy tonight," I say with a fake sad smile.

"Hm, how about tomorrow night?" he asks.

"Come to think of it, I'm busy for a while; don't know when I'll be free," I answer, smiling. He smiles back.

"So tonight, after curfew, I'll come get you," he says, not accepting my busy excuse, which makes me smile... knowing we both knew I wasn't busy.

"No, Ryder," I say, walking away when I really meant yes... I had a feeling he knew that.

"See ya tonight!" he yells after me, and I shake my head.

"Hm, he's cute," a girl whispers, startling me a bit before I smile. She has long dark hair, pulled into a perfect ponytail, blue eyes, and one tattoo that I can see on her arm of a bird on a branch. She is beautiful, smiling with her white teeth showing.
