"Yes, honey?" calls a worried woman's voice from outside the door.
Mrs. Nicolla, a plump, jolly nurse, comes into the room and gasps.
"You're awake!" she says. "Leo! She's awake!"
Huh? Who's Leo?
A man walks into the room and immediately looks relieved.
"Mr. Ross!" I say, also relieved.
But, then, almost suddenly, I'm ashamed.
"Oh, I'm so sorry! I touched the serum! I can't believe I would make the stupid mistake of taking my experiment over my safety!" I trail off, saying over and over how sorry I am.
Mr. Ross puts a hand up to stop me.
"First of all, you're going to waste all your energy. Second of all, it's my fault. I left a 7th grader alone with the science experiment of their dreams almost finished on the Benson. I should have checked how much time was left before I ran out so foolishly like that."
"It's alright. Even though I still think it's my fault. Anyway-" I cut in before he reminds me it's not my fault, "Is my dad here?"
The nurse stood up. "He's on his way." She said briefly, and went into her office again, probably to examine another patient.
10 minutes later, Mr. Ross has finished his conversation with me about quantum physics, and my dad comes in the room, looking more worried than my science teacher and the nurse combined. As soon as he sees me, he physically relaxes. His shoulders un-tense, his eyes grow brighter, and his lips slowly creep into a small smile.
"I know this is ridiculous, Aurora," he whispers slowly, " but on the way here, I thought... I thought... I would lose you like your mother." His voice gets quieter and quieter as he says this.
I jump off the examination bed, (ouch, my head's throbbing again) but ignore the pain. Then, I run over to my dad and give him the biggest bear hug ever.
"Don't worry, Dad," I whisper. "I won't ever leave you without warning you first."
We both smile with satisfaction, I because my dad isn't worried anymore, and my dad because I am safe.
I don't even think about the punishments that I will get when I go home.
