"How?" I whisper.

"I don't know," Reece says. "My nanny at the orphanage once told me-"

"What? You're an orphan?" I say, surprised. I imagined that Reece would have fun, sport-fanatic parents, and of course they would have that flaming red hair.

"Yeah." Reece says sadly. "My parents died in a forest fire when I was a baby. We lived very near the woods, and the forest fire came and pretty much swallowed them up. The reason I moved here was because my orphanage was transferred to a different location. They thought Tremont, Colorado would be much safer and better for us orphans than LA. Imagine? Anything better than living practically next to the Hollywood sign and police pretty much anywhere? No offense to you, of course."

"Oh. I'm really sorry. About your parents and moving."

Reece just smiled.

"What?" I asked. In movies, the characters usually hug and cry in this moment.

"Why are you sorry? If my parents hadn't died, I wouldn't have gone into the orphanage. If I hadn't gone into the orphanage, then I wouldn't have moved here. If I hadn't moved, then I wouldn't have met you! See? Life has its ways." Reece says.

Hmm. I never thought of it that way.

"Huh. That's a cool way to think." I say.

"I think I got my powers from the fire. Maybe I got burned, and the burn got mixed with something? I don't know. All I know is, I have superpowers." Reece says. "And I know that you do, too."

"Um, yeah, I do," I say awkwardly.

"So, what power do you have?" Reece asks excitedly.

"Um, well, I can kind of see through things and look into other people's thoughts?" I say.

"Awesome! So, X-ray vision and telepathy?" Reece says, a little bit too loudly.

"Yes, and keep your voice down! People on the other side of the wall can hear you!" I say.

It's true. I used my powers to see through the wall, and the music teacher, Ms. Correa, is looking around, thinking, "What's that noise?"

"Sorry," Reece says quietly.

"So, let's get back to class so you can beat those boys' butts!" I say, and we run out the door.
