I awoke with a frightened start, turning to see Ominis staring down at me, shaking me awake by my shoulders. I looked down and realized I had fell asleep on the table with my book underneath me.
"Wake up sleepy head" he said bringing me a cup of coffee from the kitchen. "Did you not come to bed last night?" he asked sitting down with me at the table.
I looked around and saw Anne was not in her bed. My eyes searching the small house trying to find her.
"Relax Alora, she's outside picking weeds." Taking a large sip of his coffee, steam coming up from the cup.
I sighed feeling relieved, taking a sip of my coffee, trying to wipe the sleep out of my eyes.
He looked towards the window, feeling the sunlight come through, Anne's hair occasionally catching underneath the window seal.
"Sounds like last night didn't go well."
"You heard?" I asked taking my wand, giving it a swish letting the spoon inside my cup do the work for me while it swirled.
"Obviously Alora, it was only a few feet away. You aren't necessarily quite either."
I snorted. "Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you."
"Thats quite alright, did you get the closure you needed?"
I frowned at him, confused. "What closure did you expect me to get from that?"
"That you don't need to put yourself at risk Alora, she's fine with the outcome."
"Are you okay with the outcome?" I asked, eyeing him cautiously.
His white eyes pierced right through me, giving me a hard expression before turning into a soft one. He answered me by grabbing his coffee and taking a long drink.
"Didn't think so."
"It's not at all what you're thinking."
"Oh sure it's not." I said sarcastically. "Merlin's beard Ominis, I'm starting to wonder who's really the blind one here."
"You're a difficult woman Alora."
"As are you, my friend."
I dragged my cup over the table clinking my cup with his and doing a cheers, giving him a small smile before taking a sip. Ominis rolled his eyes at me, taking a drink himself.
We turned our attention to the door when it popped open. Watching Anne come in the house, dusting off her clothes and washing her hands in the sink. Her skin was brighter today, the veins weren't a dark blue but more of a light purple that coated her face. She seemed like she had energy today and that she didn't seem to favor her side where she normally grabs her stomach when she's in pain. I hoped it was because we were here giving her a distraction.
"Who's ready for some breakfast?" she asked.
*
Breakfast was served with pancakes and eggs on the side. It was a comfortable silence listening the silverware clink together as we ate in good company. We made small talk about the weather, and what our plans were for the day. Anne insisted on staying home and finishing up the garden. We didn't protest even though the look we both gave each other was obvious. We didn't want her to tire herself out too quickly especially with it getting worse. Just yesterday she couldn't move and now she wanted to conquer the world.
"Would you two stop plotting around me, I'm fine. I need to get out and since I feel good enough, I need to take advantage of it understood?"
"Anne, we just don't want you to overdo it. Why don't you take it easy today?" he asked.
"Ominis Gaunt. When I want you to become my mother I'll ask for it. Right now, shut it."
I burst out laughing, causing myself to go into a full fit of it . Holding my stomach from it hurting, some tears dropping down my eyes.
Anne and Ominis watched me curiously for a moment before eventually joining in. Finally seeing the silliness of the situation.
"Alora, any plans you want to do today?" She asked taking a bite of her food.
"Well, honestly no I was just going to enjoy my time with you two if thats-"
"OW!" Anne yelled grabbing her side intently.
"Anne?" I asked, reaching my hand over the table to grab her hand. "What's wrong?"
Anne rocked back and forth holding her side, gripping the fabric of her shirt. She sucked in a deep breath every few seconds.
"Anne?" Ominis asked, getting up from his seat before coming over to her side.
"I'm...okay.." she sucked in deep breaths in between words. "It... just comes in waves. It will.... stop soon."
"Agh!!" she yelled, her body slumping over the table, trying to grab onto anything to brace herself.
"Anne what do we do?" Ominis asked, his wand close to her face waiting for an indication to help.
"Nothing! I just.... Ahhh!" she screamed into the table.
Ominis came over to her other side where she was gripping onto her shirt. "Anne let me look at it."
Anne nodded her head while she clenched her jaw together. Ominis careful fingers graced her shirt, lifting it up so he could feel for what was going on. After lifting up her layers of clothing, we saw a large dark spot on her skin. It looked like black and purple spider webs had coated her skin with a large dark red center. Her skin had slowly started to go pale again almost instantly with dark black veins stretching over her face and arms. Ominis slid his fingers over the red portion leaving his fingers there for a few moments as Anne groaned in pain. Us watching the veins grow inch by inch as more time went by.
He sighed heavily, dropping her shirt to let it go back into place. He stood slowly, turning to face me with a scared expression that shook me to my core. My heart raced frantically as my heart sank to my gut.
It was happening, the curse was officially killing her. So much for having a good day.
