Kuro was new to Christmas.
He learnt that everyone was new to space Christmas.
He also knew that if he liked it or not, it'd be his last Christmas.
Not that he wanted it to be his last.
He wanted to wake up on Christmas day on the 25th of every year to come.
But he knew that Shiro would need a body, that someone would learn over his soul within the black lion and what better fit for a replacement body than his clones.
The universe needed Shiro, not Kuro.
The paladins needed Shiro, not Kuro.
Even his crush would need Shiro more than she needed him, even if she hasn't realized it yet.
So, he was going to have the best first and last Christmas he'll ever have this year.
He's going to be spoiled rotten and spoil his crush.
Eat way too much food and feel terribly unwell afterwards.
Laugh at bad jokes, smile at the family gathered around him and feel the warmth of the holiday cheer.
Filling himself up on Christmas spirit, cursing out tape and wrapping presents.
Happily put up the ceiling Christmas decorations his crush couldn't reach to do and choosing the star or the angel to put on top of their tree.
Singing songs that he didn't know he knew but had been known by the memory in Shiro's mind, not his.
Finally he'll be able to close his eyes as the day comes to an end and know that he's chosen the best presents for his new family. Hopefully presents that will last past the war, something that they might tuck away in a box and forget about but once found again they'd be filled with a fond memory and a warmth in their heart.
They'll unknowingly remember Kuro, not Shiro.
It's the only gift Kuro wishes for this Christmas.
For him to be known, remembered.
He may be thought as Shiro in their minds, but they'd be unknowingly be thinking over him, only seeing him, not their old friend.
It's how he found himself still awake on Christmas eve.
He thought everyone else was already fast asleep and awaiting to wake to the expected day of Christmas.
But he was proven wrong by finding the sassiest person on the team sitting in the lion's hangars hallway. Directly before the black lion's hangar doors, having Green and Blue down the hall on the left and Red and Yellow down the hall on the right.
"Santa won't come if you stay awake" Kuro commented as he carried on taking a slow stroll towards her, hands shoved in his trousers pockets.
"He might come while I'm not looking. You never known" Katie casually remarked with a light shrug, giving a small smile towards him.
Kuro felt his heart skip a beat once her eyes landed solely on him, leaving him with her full attention. To know that for a single second or minute, he was all she saw in the universe.
He watched as she glanced back to staring down at the floor a few inches from where she sat with her back against the wall. No laptop or tech in sight. Rare for her. She seemed lost in thought, even more than usual and Kuro knew he needed to act as a leader.
But deep down, he just wanted to know why she looked so sad and defeated. He wanted to comfort her and make all the hurt go away and never allow any pain to ever touch her again.
"Missing family?" Kuro asked, sitting down beside her and staring up at the black lion's hangar, knowing the lion knew him to be a fake. He just prayed the lion didn't snitch on him and let him have a few more days with his created family.
"Yeah. I left my mum alone for Christmas last year to run away to the Garrison. Now she's all alone again without even knowing I'm trapped in space. I told myself that I'd find my family, have them home for Christmas so she wouldn't have to spend another one alone. Instead I made her spend another Christmas with even less family on earth" Katie huffed out, blurting it all out and having her voice fill with pain and frustration over failing.
"You might not be able to spend Christmas with all your family this year but you will someday. We know your brother and father alive. We'll find time to actual find them and bring them home. It might not be the same but you're still spending Christmas with family. Might not be one you had hoped for but it's one you've gained" Kuro calmly said, a shy smile on his lips as he glanced down at his crush and knowing that she won't be alone this Christmas, even if it wasn't with the family she had expected.
"I really want to end this war and bring my family home to mum. But I also don't want to lose any of you guys. I hope we always get to stay as a family in the future" Katie sniffled back, a sad smile on her lips as she didn't want to lose another family, not after just gaining her second one.
Kuro pulled her into a hug, wrapping his arms as tightly and secured as needed. Keeping his heartbeat steady and pressing a kiss to her hair. He knew he couldn't speak any reassuring words or promise her anything. He knew it'd all be a lie.
She'll gain Shiro back but he'd be gone. Maybe she wouldn't notice the differences between them, assume death changed Shiro somehow or the memory was fuzzy. But he knew how smart she was. He also knew he'd be exposed soon enough.
She wasn't going to get a Christmas with all of her second family. She didn't even gain it this year. Shiro was lost. She got his clone instead. Next year she'll have the real Shiro and he'd be gone instead.
He wasn't going to lie to her, not when he loves her so dearly.
Instead, he cherished his first and last Christmas eve where he held her in his arms until early morning Christmas Day. Been the person she had clung to, had laughed and smiled with has the tiredness started to hit.
He whispered his true feelings to her, told her how much he loves and admired her. Apologized for leaving her one day in the near future. Wished they had met in a different life where he had a chance to be prove he'd be a worthy partner who deserved her love in return of his own love for her.
But he knew they'd never meet again.
Instead he laid her down in her bed, tucked her in with his words and apologizes. Hid a second Christmas present that he knew she'd find someday in the very far future, hopefully after the war is won and she'd read HIS name on top of the second present he got her.
He could rest in peace knowing she'd learn his name one day.
A name she'll remember until death knocks at her door.
His first Christmas truly was the best one he could ask for, even if he knew it would be his last.
