She couldn't stop the smile from pulling at her lips as she felt a familiar pair of hands land on her shoulders from before. He'd never hug her from behind, never be overly affection from behind, both had been fighting a war and neither would react warmly to having their back so unguarded.
They love the other, would take a blast to the heart for the other. But they'd only end up running away and hurting the other if they showed affection from behind. To show how easily someone could have snuck up on them and taken them down without them realizing until it was too late. How their trust went deep enough that the could have overlooked a threat assuming it was just them.
They love each other enough to trust the other to not do anything more than to put their hands on their shoulders. Only placing a hand on their back if they're standing side by side. Both had a boundary and both respected it.
It's how she knew he was the one for her.
He wasn't overly touchy, didn't have the loving affection gift as most people have but he still proved he cared for her by never crossing her boundary. He wouldn't be able to be lovely-dovely in public so openly and easily but he'd listen to her geek out over a project or update. He'd complain about her to his friend's and yet, he'd still chose her at the end of the day.
He accepted her flaws and showed his own.
She was smitten for him.
The only time they've ever broken their boundaries were by accident, a busy or crowed space that ended up shoving them back to chest without either of their control. Or when danger was close by, shoving the other down and using their their own body to shield them if needed. They've always apologizes afterwards or shared an understanding, never upset that the boundary was broken for one of those two reasons.
She's seen how couples so easily break each other's boundary and it's always scared her. Frighten that if she falls in love with someone, she might not be able to trust them with her own set of boundaries as she could with her heart.
But he was different.
And she was different too.
"Hmm?" She hummed in question, feeling his hands slip free from her shoulders as he walked round to face her now that she knew it was him.
"You're missing out on the Christmas party. You're Mum is currently having a Christmas song off with Nadia. Spoiler, Nadia is losing .. badly. Lance already lays defeated" He mumbled with a faint smile as he stood facing her now, hands dangling by his sides.
"Mum loves Christmas music. No one has a chance in beating her at that competition" She confesses with a light nod, knowing her mum would crush anyone who stood before her when it came to Christmas songs.
"I thought the party's competitions were meant to be fun and fair? All competitions were meant to hold a chance for all players to win?" He asked back with an raised eyebrow, remembering that all competitions had to be fair.
