HOPE YOU HAVE A JOLLY READ
PLEASE BE AN ELF AND MAKE A VOTE
He was going to be so classic that his girlfriend would hate it.
And sure, no one wants their proposal to be hated but if his girlfriend rolled her eyes than that meant she'd love it.
It was her only wish after all.
She wanted something a bit obvious, boring and unoriginal for her engagement.
It was a small request and a big one at the same time.
A request he wanted to accept and make come true.
He knew she showed her affectionate differently to most, that she'd admire normal couples but would never be able to be as open as they were.
So, he could make her engagement be both private and unoriginal as she'd want it.
His plan was both simple and magical in his eyes.
He knew she'd be working New Years, never liked fireworks and would use the quiet base as her hiding hole during the night known to be filled with fireworks. The Garrison was a decent distance away from the closest city and it'd be mostly closed for the seasonal holiday with just a few that lived on base and those unlucky enough to work the holidays being there.
He wasn't meant to be home. Not until after New Years. Getting a job as a delivery pilot was still new to him even as he's been working it for a couple of years. But leaving the farm did him some good. He was always more happy flying than farming.
His hopefully soon to be fiancée was right to encourage him to become a pilot again. Even if he didn't stand as a soldier and just did basic Garrison deliveries between earth and other planets. He's been more happy and full of life flying again than he did working on his farm.
He didn't realize how much of himself he lost when he left for the farm on Altea until he gained his own cargo ship and flew it for the first time.
It's why he knew his hopefully future wife was the one for him.
His end game in life.
Sure, he liked Allura but he's learnt that he never loved her as he loves his girlfriend. Allura was a pretty alien that he got hooked on and a bit obsessed over. He was so blinded by his admiration and his own dreams over his type of partner that he forgot to follow his actual heart.
He was a rebound to Allura, he had learnt to accept that truth that had broke him so much.
He'd only gave up a chance with his girlfriend because he wasn't willing to give up an old school crush on the deceased friend.
Keith did him a favour punching him during his visit that time of their lives and actual reminding him how it feels to feel again. Pain wasn't the direction he'd prefer for that lecture to start with but it was a wake up call.
And he's never been more happy since falling in love with the ex green paladin.
She saved him when he was at his lowest.
