"Sharing beds like little kids
And laughing 'til our ribs get tough"

────────────

My dad walked in with random women about 5 minutes ago. I didn't bother asking who she was cause I didn't bother caring who she was. Tk's hand was resting in my hand. My dad and his new one-month stand were standing at the doorway staring and talking to each other.

"They're calling it a level two coma. He moans a little, chews in his sleep." My dad tilts his head to the left and smiles at his son.

"He's probably starving." I roll my eyes at the lady and bring my other hand on top of my brother's bed.

"Please, give me the strength to not beat a bitch up" I whisper to myself.

"And it seems like he's gonna wake up, and he just... doesn't."

The lady puts her hand on his shoulder and looks over to Tk. "Owen, I'm so sorry."

I don't understand why my dad brought a date to see his son lay in a hospital bed, but whatever floats his boat.

"But we were lucky that the bullet didn't hit his heart or his spine. It's a miracle. It did nick a major vessel in his shoulder, under the sub" My dad stutters over the lost words and looks over to me for answers.

I'm about to answer but his road gig answers.

"Subclavian artery. I had to take a couple
of anatomy surveys in grad school, so..."

I drown out the rest of their conversation and lowly talk to my brother.

"Come on Tk, I need you to say what I'm thinking because if you were here right now you would be rolling your eyes just as much as me."

I'm pulled back into the twos helpless conversations when they both walk over to Tk and me.

"Come on, come meet the twins."

I may not be a fan of the lady but I still look to her in respect.

"This is Raya. She's older by 7 minutes." I shake my head at my dad and look back down.

"No, Dad. Tk's older." It takes everything in my body not to start an argument with my dad but I don't for the sake of my brother.

My Dad ignores my comment and introduces me to the lady, but I don't even bother catching her name.

"He looks like you."

"He looks more like his mother."

The lady looks up at my dad and taps on Tks bed. "Does she know yet?"

"She's traveling on business in China. She's desperately trying to get a flight back, but... I told her by the time that happens, he'll be awake." My dad looks over to me as I wipe a stray tear that slipped out of my eye.

"The doctors say it could be any minute. So we're just waiting here."

"I'm glad you're here." Bile climbs up my throat as they hug, and act like they are the only ones in the room. I take a big breath and drop my brother's hand.

I stand up and walk out of the room before my dad and whats-her-name start going a little too far.

I walk over to the elevator and press the button, but after 20 seconds I opt for the stairs. I push the stairs door open and begin my journey down to the first-floor kitchen.

I've been down in the kitchen for about 30 minutes with a coffee that is now cold and a muffin that only has one bite taken out of it. It's now dark outside and the bitter air is slinking its way into the hospital. I'm staring at this older lady and I'm assuming her daughter sitting in the lobby checking in. The assumed daughter is asking her mom questions and then checking them off the checklist. It reminds me of my mom, but viscera. My mom asked me the questions at every single doctor's appointment in New York. Even when I turned 25 she still accompanied me, even when she had to work.
