"And I try to be tough, but I wanna scream
How could anybody do the things you did so easily?"──────⊱⁜⊰──────
I didn't go home when I got back. I had yet again another Uber take me to the fire station. All my things were left in my locker like my uniform and all my hygienic items. I actually got back before the team got back from a call so I had a little bit of time to get ready and prepare myself.
When I walked into the firehouse, it was quiet, except for 2 firefighters who waved at me happily. I waved back and made my way to the kitchen, my rolling suitcase followed behind me. I had no idea where I was gonna put this so I decided to drag it upstairs to the locker room and set it in a little closet.
The locker room felt like home. As weird as that to say, I'm glad I'm back.
Even though I miss the 118.
And Eddie.
But all my things were here. My family. My clothes. And my work that you already know I'm gonna throw myself into until I'm fine again.
I dig through my locker getting myself ready with my hygiene and my uniform.
When I'm done I make my way back downstairs and watch as both of the rigs reverse back, and a cop car pulls up which I'm assuming is Carlitos.
My heart pounds in my chest.
I stand where everyone can see me when they hop out of the truck, but ultimately it doesn't matter who sees me first. I know the questions are gonna start to roll and worry is gonna start to set it.
Marjan pops out of the rig followed by Tk and Mateo, who are all three arguing. "I told you it smelled like tacos in that house. And you wanted to say Mac and cheese." Marjan yells out which makes Tk and Mateo groan.
"Give it a rest Marj, we know you were right."
Judd hops down as well as Paul, and then Dad steps down from the Captain's seat. Nobody had spotted me yet because they were all too busy arguing with each other about what the house fire smelled like.
Judd throws out chicken, while Paul and my father agree on brussels sprouts.
The team keeps going on and on until Judd finally gives up and his eyes travel past the team and to mine.
I smile at him and smooth my uniform down.
Why am I so nervous?
"Well hot damn!" He yells out causing the team to stop and follow his eye trail.
Carlos has now stepped in and a pleasant smile rests on his face.
Tk steps forward to me and has a confused face. "What are you doing here? I thought you weren't supposed to be back till tomorrow?" He walks forward and gives me a short hug.
It hurts my chest and arm making me wince but thankfully no one catches it. I shrug and look at every one. "I just missed you guys too much."
My father scoffs and is next to hug me.
How many hugs do I gonna have to give?
"I know better than that. We're glad you're back kid." I smile at his words and watch him walk away. "Come talk to me when you're done."
I nod at him and then turn back to the rest of the team. I give hugs to Marjan, Mateo, Paul, and Judd and watch them as they walk away. I turn back with a relieved sigh but realize Carlos and Tk are still standing in front of me with narrow eyes.
