"And I'm just an arrogant son of a bitch
Who can't admit when he's sorry"

We were called to an emergency airplane landing, except the plane never actually landed on the ground.

But on live electrical wires.

The rescue was almost fatal, but since my dad only has one brain cell he decided to climb the wires to save the last man up there.

Dangerous but impressive.

I tried to be mad at him but as soon as he landed on the rescue pad and watched as the plane blew up my anger went away. As soon as he turned around I engulfed him in a huge hug, which he gifted back.

"I hate when you do impressive things." I grab the harness from my dad and put it in the proper place in the rig. My dad's hair is still a little spiked from the wind and my braid looks like a bird's nest but I don't mind it. My dad eyes me as I hum a tune and straightens things inside the rig.

Judd joins him and I can hear a faint bit of their interaction.

"She seems happy." Judd looks over to me and carries his turnout coat over his shoulder.

"Weirdly happy. I mean Raya can be happy sometimes but not here. Not in Texas. And especially not without her brother."

I cut the conversation short as I stick my head into a compartment in the rig. "I can literally hear both of you." I push the harness to the very back and bring my head out of the box. The two of them both look guilty and turn and make their way into the rig. I pull down the compartment door and slam it shut.

If this is what I get for being happy then they should understand why I'm always so upset.

Medical had already left the scene and Paul was the only one we were waiting for to get in the rig.

"Let's go, Paulie." Judd opens the door and yells outs. Paul is in the rig not 30 seconds after that and from there we are on the move.

The ride there is almost unbearably full of tension. Im not sure if it's because Dad and Judd getting caught or I missed something.

Where almost to the station when dispatch is heard over the radio.

"Engine 126, RA unit 126, accident on West Pecan and Grand Avenue. Please report to the scene. Engine 126, RA unit 126, accident on West Pecan and Grand Avenue. Please report to the scene."

Gus takes the next turn and we are on the path to the accident.

"Dispatch this is Captain Owen Strand with the 126, we're on our way." My dad radios over the walkie-talkie and turns to look at us.

"Everyone good?"

"Yes, Sir" Marj speaks for the whole team. Cap looks at me as I stare out the window. He inhales a deep breath and turns back to face the road.

We're about 30 seconds away from the accident so we take our headsets off and unbuckle ourselves so we can make a quick exit. Judds exits the left side first, then Marj, then me. I throw my turnout coat and helmet on and meet up with my dad to hear our orders.

"Alright, I want Marj and Mateo taking care of that gas leak. Judd, I want you to back everyone up and aw—" His words slowly lose focus as I see a dark-haired man directing traffic between pedestrians and cars.

I cut through the circle that my team has formed and between Cap and Mateo.

"Raya? I wasn't done." I continue walking and ignore the group's calls for me. I get to the man and reach out and put my hand on his shoulder to spin him around.
