"So when I speak, you bet your life, my words are true."──────⊱⁜⊰──────
"Maybe we should go out and help them search," Marjan speaks out as Eddie is sitting up against a huge rock and I'm laying on top of it with my helmet shielding my face from the sun.
"Judd told us to stay here. That's what we should do." Eddie calmly says and pulls out his phone.
"How can you be so calm under literal fire?" Marjan speaks and I lean my head up to look at her with a 'bitch for real?' look but she waves me off.
"Well, at least no one's shooting at us" Eddie responds as Marjans phone goes off.
She pulls it out and taps a few buttons before looking up at Eddie in shock.
"Seriously? You wanna follow me on Insta?"He tilts his head to the side and adds a goofy smile to his face. "Heard you put a lot of effort into it. Was curious."
"I'll show you mine if you show me yours." I roll my eyes inside my helmet and quietly mock Marjans words.
Oh my god,
Paul was right.
"I haven't been on social media in a while. The last post is, like, nine months old. Super boring. "
"I'll be the judge of that. Fine. Deal." This time Eddie's phone is the one that dings.
"Is that a Prius in the air?" The memories of that day paint the back of my eyes.
"Tornado dropped it between two buildings. Huh. Is this your kid?" Now this I can get under. I lift my helmet off my face and sit up.
"You got a kid? How old are you?" I ask him as I lean over to see the picture that Marjan is showing me with her phone.
He smiles at my questions but skips the second one. "Yeah, that's Christopher. He's my world. Doing the whole, you know, single dad thing."
"You did not build him a skateboard." Marjans mouth drops in a smile and she turns the phone over to me so I can see.
"He has CP, so he doesn't get to do a lot of things like normal kids do. Even the things he can do, he's not invited."
"I can relate to that," I mumble and lean back down on the rock.
Eddie and Marjan both look over at me and tell me to elaborate.
"Well, not exactly, but I do know how it feels to be left out. When I was diagnosed with Vfib, I told my parents and my brother that I didn't want anyone to know in 4th grade, I had this best friend who I told everything, so I told her about the flip flop in my body and the-" I wiggle my fingers over my body and Marjan shakes her head but Eddie looks lost.
"Situs inversus" his eyes widen in awe, and my face grows hot.
"But anyways, I told her about it and she went around the whole school and told everyone that I was an alien because she thought that my heart was in my ass." Marjan chuckles but quickly plays it off with a cough and a fist to the chest. I raise my eyebrows at her and continue my story.
"So when I told my family not to say anything about the Vfib, my brother turned right around and told his best friend who then told a kid on the football team, and then the cheerleaders found out, then the band kids, and so on. But eventually, the truth turn into rumors, that I was dying and only had a couple of months to live. So my prom date ditched me the day before prom, and I had lost all excitement to go. And then after that, I wasn't invited to parties or school events, and it even got to the point where teachers would ask if I could do my work in the library "because we don't want anything to happen and nobody to be prepared." I air-quote the last sentence and stare up at the cloudy sky.
