Grabbed my hand, pushed me down
Took the words right out my mouth

When I walked into my apartment building alone, I had to fight Carlos about it since he insisted on giving me a private escort to my room. The lobby felt odd.

Not odd, just quiet. Maybe because I knew when I opened my door, the apartment would be halfway empty. Myles' shoes wouldn't decorate the hallway floor, or the smell of cleaner wouldn't dance through the rooms when he walked in after a shift.

"Welcome back Mrs. Strand. How was your trip?" Francie, our— my lobby attendant said, as I walked by. She was a sweet old lady. The apartment building had been her family for years. She grew up here and so did both of her sons and her grandsons.

And she just so happens to think both of her grandsons would be good for me. I politely decline every single time.

I smile at her with a wave. I try my best to look presentable but my eyes are still puffy and red. "It was alright, how are you?"

She clasps her hands together happily and squints her eyes at me. "I'm a fantastic sweetheart. Mulberry is feeling better. He's already up and going. Oh, stop by and see him will you? He loves you."

She also loved cats.

She was an old cat lady.

And I loved every part of it.

I bob my head at her. "I'll stop by tomorrow and talk to him. You have a good rest of your night." I wave and walk off but a realization comes over me, so I stop and turn back to her.

"Ms. Francie, Do you know if Myles came by today."

Her ears perk up and Myles's name. And surprise surprise she wasn't the biggest fan of him either, but that was because she thought her youngest grandsons would be a better match. Her eyes are sweet and soft. "I'm not sure sweetheart, Cody worked the counter this morning while I ran to the store. I could ask him, darling."

I shake my head and grin. "It's fine. Thank you." I continue my adventure to the elevator. I press the button and wait. While I'm waiting I admire the stars that shine through the emergency fire exit.

Funny story. One time a few months after we moved here, I accidentally used that door to get my groceries. I was met with a rude awakening when I made the whole building evacuate and the 126 B shift showed up, to say the least, it was very embarrassing for me.

The elevator door opens, so I step in. I could have definitely used the stairs but just the thought of moving my body that much makes my stomach twist.

As the elevator doors shut and I start moving up, I pull out my phone and send a quick text to Eddie. Completely forgot, I was supposed to do it earlier.

"Made it to the station and then was sent home almost instantly from my father. Just thought I would let you know. Thx again."

By the time I send it, the elevator doors are being slid open and my hallway is revealed.

It feels like home. Yet my stomach is still turning. As I walk down the hallway my phone goes off so I read it while I walk.

"I'm glad you made it back. Hopefully, we can see again soon. I know you miss me already. Is the jet lag terrible or what?"

I chuckle as I read the text. I don't feel guilty when I text him. Not anymore at least. I keep the message app open on my phone while I reach for my key to unlock the door.
