A Small Light

After a carriage ride that took forever for Nellie she finally came to the infirmary in Newcastle. For a moment she thought the ride would never end but finally she rushed trough the hall entered the room where twenty patients were lying in a row. She looked one by one trying to see him ash she bumped into one of the nurses "Mr Lewis" she uttered breathlessly.

"Follow me Mrs Lewis" the nurse gave a smile happy that they would be reunited and leaded her through the hallway to another room. The nurse waited for her to open the door and stepped aside. Not waiting another second Nellie pushed the door open. She gave a whimper placing her hand on her chest affected by how he looked lying there. She could see how much he had been fighting for his life. There were bandages around his hand and she could see the bruises on his knuckles as she approached her.

"He sleeps most of the time because of the medication" the nurse informed looking with compassion filled eyes wich upon Nellie only nodded before the nurse left the two alone.

She took his bandaged hand and kissed his palm "I'm here my love, I'm finally by you're side.. oh how much I missed you" How much she wished, dreamed for this moment, not wanting him to be injured of course but finally she was by his side after hours waiting to finally see him.

She placed his hand gently back and reached up to cup his cheek, his face so pale, he'd lost weight she could tell by how the hollows in his cheeks where more deep, the cirkels around his eyes more darker and sunken. It was like he'd been in a war. She carresed his cheek with her thumb. "I'm so sorry, I'm so late" she bursted out finally letting everything go. Feeling so guilty beceause she wasn't here before, beceause he had been laying here all alone and she was mourning his death home while he was alive. How could she ever explain this to him. "I love you, I love you more than anything" and there it was the words he'd been hoping she would say again to him, she wished he could hear them.

Was it beceause he heard her she didn't know but slowly he started moving with much groaning and being restless in pain. "I'm here my love, I'm here" She reached to his hand again and held it in her two palms "AAAGGHH!!" he snatched his hand away as his groans became more louder making her gasp due to his sudden move.

"AAGH! He groans again and she doesn't know what to do seeing him twist in pain and headed to the door calling the nurses for help.

Two nurses rushed to the room and tried to calm him down and help him give his medicine. "Mrs Lewis please wait for a second outside" one of the nurses helped her out so she wouldn't be affected too much. It was too late she was so broken seing him like that. Her heart couldn't endure what she saw and walked out of the room crying. Her vision started blurring and her head spinning as she saw a man approaching her.

"Mrs" he hold her and pushed a chair under her before she lost total consciousness "Please sit here" he helped her sit on the chair and waited by her side for a second till he was sure it was over. When the spinning of her head was over she could see him more clear, it was the doctor.

Closing her eyes she started sobbing out loud. How much more did they have to suffer, wasn't all that they had been through not enough? Her poor Sweeney, her love was in such misery before her very eyes and she couldn't do anything to stop it.

"Just a minute in a matter of time his suffering would be over" the doctor told her and headed inside. After listening to him in agony for some more time, his groans in pain began to diminish. She remained there sobbing because there was nothing she could do, she couldn't be a solution to his pain even how much she wanted to.

"Is he going to get better?" She asked the moment the doctor came out of the room. He grabbed a chair and positioned himself diagonally over her and sighed."I'll be frank he's not good, he's in so much pain. I think he's broken his spine with falling overboard. He screams and groans in pain with the slightest move that's why he lays here isolated, it bothers the other patients." he took a moment as if to prepare her for what he was about to say next and continued.
