The toffees

A month had past now Sweeney and Nellie where exercising, not skipping one day. The first time he stood on his feet with her help she started to cry out of happiness. Even it was with help he could stand and walk.

They took everything step by step, everyday trying a little more, a step further is his recovery. Nellie felt a little better now the more he could get on his feet the more her mood changed and his too. He could walk it was unbelievable.

A little apprehensive to let him walk alone Nellie asked Arthur to help them. Sweeney of course said she was being overprotective and he wanted to try alone, it wasn't Sweeney that wasn't ready it was Nellie afraid of he would fall and hurt himself. So she used the boy for help and he couldn't believe his eyes like seeing a dead man coming to life as he saw him standing arm in arm with Nellie for the first time, his other arm holding a crutch he used for help, now and then Arthur took the place of the crutch to help Nellie.

Now he could walk from his bed to the dinner table, with wobbly steps like a toddler learning to walk. He sat there for his meals but he couldn't take too much yet, standing too long on his feet gave him back pain but he got there with her help. Every time he got a little further Nellie couldn't believe what he achieved in this short time and she was so proud of him. While he had given up on himself exercising was all he needed. Of course he didn't do this without having something in return so he could secure her rest and Nellie was happy to agree, for a month now too she took things easy, usually her afternoons where more calm after her morning rush and she took once a week a day of. Finally things started to change for the two after so much misery.

Nellie was walking out of the shop she couldn't hold back herself from going in when she saw something for her husband. He deserved it after insisted so much for her to buy some new dresses on her free day when he saw how she needed maternity clothes. The ones she wore were starting to get too small, especially for her belly now she started to gain more weight she couldn't fit in her dresses she had and it was not proper for a pregnant women to wear tight clothing, it was common to wear more loose dresses to cover their pregnancy. She choose two dresses she could alternate later to wear them when the baby was born. Of course she hadn't forgotten the baby, she had finished his white blanket and bought new wool to start knit little clothes for him.

As Nellie walked happily along the street over the cobblestones. She couldn't shake off the sudden feeling of unease that had settled in the pit of her stomach like someone was following her every step.

The more she walked along the alleyway the more she started to be scared, images of Mr. Anderson flashed through her mind and when she felt the person approaching her more she turned around in fear.

"Don't come closer!" Her back collided with the wall holding her basket out to protect herself like it would help. But when the identity of the follower was revealed Nellie realized it wasn't who she thought it was.

"It's me Victoria, oh god I'm so sorry I scared you." Dorthy spoke apologisingly seeing her so afraid and tried to reassure her.

Nellie's wide eyes turned soft again holding her hand on her chest trying to calm her racing pulse. "You give me a fright Dorthy, why didn't you say anything?" Her heart was still beating so fast, she thought someone was following her. Since Mr. Anderson had approached her Nellie had been more careful, taking Sweeney's razor with her, which she almost had taken from under her corset. Fortunately she hadn't seen Mr. Anderson again and she heard later from Louise he was back to Newcastle so she was glad the matter was irrevocably resolved. Even though he was gone, she decided to take the razor with her from then on. This situation had shown her that she was a pregnant woman walking alone and you never know when you might need to defend yourself.
