After a long journey through the cold winter morning, Sweeney finally arrived at noon home still a little limping. Three weeks had passed and after this morning he was confident he was going to recover tottally, that was what doctor Greenhow was hoping for at least. This morning he visited him in the infirmary in Newcastle. Doctor Greenhow told him how fortunate he was and it was a miracle because he hadn't seen much people recover from the same condition he was in. He asked him to do some exercises so he could see how strong his legs had become. His left leg had slightly less strength but his right was as good as before and he was only greatful for that. The months of exercising day in and day out had clearly helped him a lot. He was a miracle the whole town called him like that. The first day he came out of home with Nellie in his arm for a walk, everyone who passed them by greeted him telling him it was god's gift for him to heal like this. How proud he was that day, his whole mood changed and it made Nellie emotional to see him happy like that.
"Vic, I'm home." He called out to his wife as he walked down the hallway towards the parlor. Concern gnawed at him again when he received no response making him push the door, so that he could reunite with her. Actually he was concerned to leave her a whole morning alone but she was the one that insisted him to go, as he maybe wasn't going be able to go if she would give birth. So, he asked Arthur to stay with her for if something might happed and he came with the first carriage he found back.
"Happy birthday day!" Nellie and Arthur exclaimed in unison with excitement as he opened the door. He froze, his eyes widening in surprise as he took in the sight of his heavily pregnant wife holding a birthday cake with flickering candles on it in her hands, with Arthur standing proudly by her side as excited as she was to surprise him.
He was overcome with mixt feelings as he struggled to comprehend the overwhelming gesture. How could he have forgotten his own birthday that was on the 30th of December? The realization washed over him mingling with gratitude and astonishment beceause she hadn't forgotten.
Nellie rushed forward, her eyes sparkling with love and excitement. "Surprise!" She exclaimed, offering him the cake. "Make a wish and blow the candles out." She says holding the cake close to him. A lump formed in Sweeney's throath from the emotion that leaved him for a moment speechless as he blew the candles out, making a silent wish.
"Happy birthday, my love." Nellie whispered into his ear, her voice choked with emotion as she pecked his cheek with a tender kiss. The moment she withdrew she could see how his eyes where glistening with a fainth smile on his lips even though he tried to act serious in the presence of the boy. She knew she made him happy.
Sweeney took a moment to collect himself, his gaze lingering on his wife's radiant expression. Composing himself he cleared his throat. "Thank you." He says with gratitude beceause she hadn't forgotten his birthday in the chaos of the recent months.
"Happy birthday Mr. Lewis, I'm sorry I have no present sir, I made you something." Arthur aprroached handing him a rolled up piece of paper with a thread tied around it.
"Thank you boy." He accepted Arthur's humble gift, he didn't expect anything from the child, him just thinking about it was kind enough.
"Come sit at the table so I can cut the cake." Nellie interrupted the two before he opened the paper. As they approached the table, Sweeney couldn't help but notice the effort Nellie had put into setting it so beautifully. Candles that weren't yet lit and flowers adorned the table, adding to the romantic ambiance.
Sweeney took his usual place at the head of the table, while Nellie began cutting the cake. Meanwhile he untied the thread and unrolled the paper, revealing a beautiful drawing. "You made this?" He asked Arthur, genuinly surprised by the beauty of the drawing making him think that somehow his wife had helped with it.
