"This is the place." The proud teacher motioned towards the cafe. He had been coming here for months now and just couldn't get enough. Their coffee and baked treats were outstanding. Not to mention the pretty woman working behind the counter. "You'll love it." He assured.
Daichi just smiled. He knew of the place. It had quite the reputation. But even so, he had never been inside.
Daichi and Suga wondered in, finding the cafe to be surprisingly empty. There were a few customers hanging around, but nothing like normal. Sugawara smiled. He had brought Daichi at the perfect time.
"Sugawara!" Y/N called out to him before she fully reached the table. She was the real reason Suga and Daichi were here today. Not that Daichi needed to know that. "It's great to see you again! Would you like your regular?"
For months Suga has been coming to the cafe and it didn't take him long before he recognized a familiar face. Y/N, the older sister and guardian of one of his students.
Y/N's eyes finally settled on the figure sitting across from Suga. "Oh, I am so sorry. I didn't realize you had someone with you. Would you two like some time to look over the menu?"
Suga laughed. "Don't worry about it."
Daichi shifted slightly in his seat, feeling Y/N's eyes on him. "You must be Sawamura." She said. "Sugawara has told me a lot about you."
Daichi was in a daze. She knew his name? What all had Suga been saying about him. Y/N laughed, it was like music to his ears. "My name is L/N Y/N and I'll be your server today. Please let me know when you two are ready." Before Daichi could come to his senses, she had walked away.
"I've never seen you so flustered before Daichi." Sugawara teased. The tips of Daichi's ears burned. He grumbled something under his breath but Suga couldn't make it out.
"She's beautiful isn't she?" Sugawara asked with a smile. Suddenly Daichi's heart deflated. Of course Suga liked her.
"She is."
"She's kind and hardworking too. Quite the catch." Suga continued.
"I'm sure she is." Daichi tried to be supportive of his friend, but nothing could hide the dejected look lingering behind his smile. Sugawara was quick to catch this and he laughed again.
"Not for me, for you Daichi." Suga clarified. Daichi's heart flooded with hope as he stared wide eyed at his dear friend.
"You're kidding." This wasn't the first time that Suga had tried to set Daichi up. But he hadn't meddled like this in at least two years. Especially not after all of his previous attempts had failed.
"Come on Daichi, I know she is your type." His type was an understatement. Suga had definitely hit the nail on the head this time.
"I don't know Koshi. I mean, she's got to be in her early twenties. What would she want with a 27 year old?" Daichi explained this calmly, trying to ease his racing heart. Every time he glanced over at her, he couldn't help but become dazed all over again.
"Actually, she's 24. And I happen to know that she is single and open to dating." Sugawara announced. He couldn't stop smiling at Daichi, who kept stealing glances at Y/N. "You should go for it."
Daichi paused, stealing another glance at Y/N. Unfortunately she met his gaze this time. Y/N smiled brightly at the officer and began heading towards their table.
"Are you two ready to order?" Sugawara gave Daichi a knowing look and subtly nodded his head towards Y/N. As if silently telling Daichi to go for it. Daichi, in return, narrowed his eyes at Suga.
Y/N watched this scene play out silently, holding in a giggle. She had a good idea about what was going on.
Daichi was the first to break the silence. "Can I get a coffee and..." he paused to look over the confections menu, "dorayaki."
"Great choice!" Y/N smiled.
"I'll stick with my regular."
"Okay," Y/N read off her note pad. "One brown sugar milk tea with extra tapioca, one slice of cheesecake, one coffee and one order of dorayaki."
Once Y/N had walked away and the two men were sure that she was out of ear shot, they began to speak again. "You should really just go for it."
"Koshi, what all do you know about her?"
"I know she is hard working and dedicated. She is kindhearted and loves children. She has a nine year old brother that she takes care of."
"A brother?" Daichi interrupted.
"Yes. His name is B/N."
"How do you know all of this?" The longer Daichi sat there, the more this felt like a set up. Sugawara knew far too much about Y/N. And the fact that Y/N immediately knew who he was felt like an indicator too.
"B/N is one of my students and L/N is his legal guardian." Sugawara explained. Daichi paused. She is her brothers legal guardian.
"Koshi, have you ever heard her say that she is looking for a partner?" Daichi asked.
"Well, not in those exact words. But-" All of the hope built up inside Daichi came crashing down. As much as it disappointed him, Daichi knew his next words needed to be said.
"Koshi if you have never heard L/N say that then you really shouldn't be trying to set her up. She is taking care of a child. She has enough on her plate. It wouldn't be right of me to try and work my way into her life." His voice was firm but quiet, trying to ensure that they wouldn't be overheard. He stole another glance at Y/N, but this time filled with guilt. She looked so happy. It wouldn't be right to disrupt her life.
"I'm sorry." Sugawara knew there was no changing Daichi's mind. His plan for Daichi to make a move had failed. It seemed impossible. She was his dream girl. But Daichi being as kind as he is, wouldn't try to disrupt her life.
Sugawara couldn't help but feel defeated as they ate. As much as Daichi tried to appear unaffected by Y/N's presence, he failed. But Sugawara knew that he wouldn't make the first move.
It didn't take long before the pair were finished up and walking out the door. "How long until your shift starts?" Suga asked.
Daichi checked his phone with a sigh. "About thirty minutes." Daichi felt a pang of guilt looking at the dejected expression on Sugawara's face. Honestly, he felt dejected too.
"Well-" "Wait!" The pair was interrupted by Y/N's voice. She came running out of the cafe with two drinks in hand.
"Take these, on the house." Y/N hastily handed the two men their drinks before darting back inside the cafe.
"Didn't see that coming." Sugawara chuckled before taking a long sip out of his brown sugar milk tea. "Hey," he paused. "What's that?"
Daichi raised a brow before realizing what Suga was pointing at. A small note attached to his cup.
Call me sometime?
