Y/N thought she would never see Yaku again when he left for Russia after high school. They were best friends, even after he left. She and Yaku video chatted all the time as well as constantly messaged each other.
Y/N wasn't sure when her feelings for her best friend changed. Perhaps it was the day she found out he was leaving for Russia to play volleyball. She was happy for him of course, but she was absolutely crushed. Y/N wanted nothing more than for him to stay. She didn't even realize how much until it was too late.
Of course, Y/N never told Yaku about her change in feelings. Yaku had asked her countless times why she hadn't dated in nine years, but Y/N always lied. It wasn't like she could admit that she was in love with him and wasn't attracted to anyone else. Even though she couldn't be, Y/N was completely devoted to Yaku and she was well aware that it made her absolutely hopeless.
Yaku was just so perfect in Y/N's eyes. Everything about him. They were best friends for a reason after all. They had a lot in common. Especially their love for volleyball. Although an injury prevented Y/N from playing professionally. The injury had taken her out her third year. She had been so close to going professional. But Y/N compromised by becoming a personal trainer. Not for every day people, but rather for professional athletes. She worked for the MSYB Black Jackals in Japan. Yaku was lucky though. He was recruited by Russia to play in their Super League.
Y/N flopped down on the couch in her home. She glanced at the picture frame sitting on the end table. It was a photo of her and Yaku after they graduated. It was the last time she had seen him in person. It was taken the day he left. Y/N picked up the picture and hugged it to her chest.
She missed Yaku deeply. It had been a while since their last call and Y/N missed him. She knew Yaku was busy, she was too. As their professional careers progressed, they both got busier. Y/N sighed and put the picture back in its place. She was down bad for Yaku. She knew that. Y/N also believed it was completely one sided.
Y/N snapped out of her dangerous self pity when she heard a knock at her door. She stood and walked to the door. She was grateful that she hadn't already changed into comfy clothes. Y/N pulled the door open and her eyes went wide.
Yaku stood in front of her with his usual smile. "Yaku?" Y/N asked in shock. She had to be imagining things. There was no way Yaku was in Japan, let alone at her door. He would have told her.
"Surprise!" Yaku exclaimed. Giving absolutely no regard to personal space or acceptable behavior, Y/N grabbed Yaku's face and examined him. She turned and looked at him from all sides of his face. His hair was slightly longer than the last time she had seen him and his facial features had matured. But it was certainly Yaku, that was for sure.
"You, you're really here! In Japan! What are you doing here?!" Y/N rushed out. Yaku smiled at her and placed his hands over hers. The action grounded Y/N and a smile spread across her face. "Heh, your hands are cold." She spoke calmer that time with a loving smile. Yaku gently guided Y/N's hands back down to her side, but he didn't pull his hands away from hers.
"I'm not surprised," Yaku responded. "It's cold out here." Realization hit Y/N and she quickly pulled Yaku inside her home. Yaku smiled fondly at her.
"What are you doing here, Yaku?" Y/N asked.
Yaku's smile never faded. "I made the Japan National Team. I wanted to surprise you," he replied happily. "Are you surprised?"
"Surprised?! Yaku I could kiss you right now!" Y/N exclaimed before she could think. It had just slipped out of her mouth. Heat rushed to Y/N's cheeks and her eyes went wide. Yaku mirrored her reaction before a smile spread across his face.
"Then do it," he responded daringly.
"What?" Y/N asked.
"I said kiss me," Yaku said. He took a step closer to her and lifted one of his hands to cup Y/N's cheek. Y/N was certain that her heart was about to beat out of her chest. Yaku, her best friend, the man she loved, wanted her to kiss him. Y/N's eyes fell to his lips.
When Yaku realized that Y/N wasn't going to lean in despite staring at his lips, Yaku made a move. He leaned in and gently pressed his lips against Y/N's. It was a gentle, long kiss but their lips did not move.
Yaku pulled back with a satisfied grin. "I've wanted to do that for years," he confessed. Y/N's eyes widened.
"You have?" She asked.
Yaku smiled playfully. "Don't tell me that you didn't know that I am in love with you." Yaku said it like it was the easiest thing in the world. Y/N gaped at him. She had in fact not know that. If she had, she would have saved them both time and confessed her own feelings.
"You love me?" Y/N asked.
"How could I not?" Yaku asked as he delicately stroked Y/N's cheek. "You love me too, don't you?" Yaku suddenly retracted his hand. "Or did I majorly misread this?"
Y/N grabbed Yaku's hand and put it back on her cheek. "You didn't misread anything. I've been in love with you for years," Y/N confessed.
Yaku smiled again. "Good, cause I really want to kiss you again," he said. Y/N smiled at him and let Yaku pull her in for another kiss.
