She always smelled so sweet. And Tendo Satori loved it. Y/N was always drawing him in with the scent of baked confections. It radiated from her. He guessed that's what happens when someone works in a bakery all day. He was so drawn towards her, and it didn't help that they worked next door to each other. Every time a customer opened the door to the chocolate shop, the scent of baked goods always flooded Tendo's senses, and with it came the image of Y/N. It was distracting.
He hadn't intended to become so smitten with someone so quickly. Especially not when he had just moved back to Japan to open his own chocolate shop. But here he was, unable to get the young woman out of his mind.
Unsurprisingly, Y/N was in the same boat. She had just opened her bakery, so she should be hard at work with no distractions. But, Y/N just couldn't get that red-haired man out of her mind. He was all she could think about and her work was starting to become affected. Brownies and other chocolate confections becoming more and more present.
Chocolate was what she was working with today. She wanted to get his attention so damn bad. And so, she decided on a chocolate and raspberry cake topped with a thin dark chocolate layer and topped with raspberries and chunks of dark chocolate. But the only problem was, she couldn't get the damn chocolate to temper right.
She had been trying and trying to temper the chocolate just right but failed every time. It was getting frustrating. She had been at it for hours but had made zero progress. Y/N was just about to give up when the bell rang, signaling that someone had just entered the bakery.
"Y/N!" A familiar voice sang. Despite only knowing him for a few months, Y/N could never mistake that voice for anyone else. "I brought chocolate!" This wasn't a surprise. Tendo brought Y/N chocolates at least once a week.
"I'm in the back." She called out. Tendo took that as an invitation and wandered back into the kitchen. He was shocked to see how chaotic it looked. Y/N always ran a clean and tidy kitchen, but this, this was a disaster zone. She looked like a mess, with chocolate on her cheek and powders on her apron.
"What happened here?" All of the frustration built up inside Y/N and came out in a bitter laugh. Tendo watched with wide eyes as tears welled up in Y/N's eyes.
"I can't do it." She whispered. "How can I call myself a baker when I can't even temper chocolate?" Tendo immediately rushed to her side, wrapping his arms around Y/N's frame. She needed this, he could tell.
"How long have you been at this?" Tendo's voice was full of concern. He had never seen Y/N in such a state. She was always so confident and adventurous with her creations. But today she was ready to cry over tempered chocolate?
"Four, maybe five hours." Her voice was weak and exhausted. "I closed up early today to work on something special but I can't get it right."
"How can I help? You know, chocolate is my specialty." Tendo threw in that last comment playfully, hoping to lift Y/N's mood. Y/N smiled a bit. As much as she wanted to do this on her own, she knew that she needed Tendo's help. Although this cake was meant for him, she couldn't pass up this opportunity. It was the perfect chance to get closer to him.
"Can you take a look at my previous attempts and tell me what I did wrong? And then, possibly, show me how to do it correctly?" Tendo looked over at the cooling rack stacked with tiny cakes. There were six in total, two of which were not covered in chocolate yet. The first one was sloppy, nothing like Y/N's normally polished products. The second was a bit better, but both were coated in a layer of chocolate that was slightly off-colored. Tendo knew this meant the chocolate hadn't been tempered correctly and would easily melt.
The third cake looked nearly perfect, with only a few minor flaws. But the problem laid with the chocolate layer. While it was certainly tempered better than the first batch, but it had solidified a different color than the chocolate chunks on top of the cake. And while the fourth cake looked perfect, it had the same problem.
Tendo thought carefully, trying to figure out a way to explain the issues in a way that someone else could understand. "See these white marks on the first two cakes?" Y/N nodded. "These happen when chocolate is melted without tempering. What process did you use to melt the chocolates?"
Y/N blushed. "I forgot that I had to temper the chocolate for the first batch, so I..." Y/N paused, embarrassed to admit this in front of a chocolatier. "I microwaved it." Tendo didn't belittle her or poke fun, but he laughed. He thought it was adorable that Y/N had made such a simple mistake.
"Now these two look way better. If I had to guess, I would say the chocolate melted too fast. That's why it is slightly discolored and doesn't have the shine of tempered chocolate." Y/N nodded. It made sense, the chocolate had melted rather quickly. Perhaps the heat was set too high. Either way, Y/N was glad that Tendo hadn't said the issues were due to a problem with her molds.
She wasn't positive, but Y/N believed the use of molds is what allowed for a nice, even layer of chocolate and what allowed for the shine. She remembered Tendo mentioning this once while she watched him work.
"Would you like me to help you?" Y/N nodded eagerly. She loved watching Tendo work, and with his help, she knew the last two cakes would be perfect.
She expected Tendo to take the lead, demonstrating how to properly melt the chocolate. Instead, Tendo stood closely behind Y/N, pinning her body against the counter after she finished setting up for the process. Y/N gasped at the proximity, feeling Tendo's body flush against her.
"Now that the water is at a gentle simmer, you want to turn the heat on low and place the bowl of chocolates over the pot." Tendo reached around Y/N to work as he spoke. He grabbed Y/N's hand and began stirring the chocolate. "Now you want to stir the chocolate until it reaches 49 degrees."
Y/N couldn't breathe, desperately hanging on to Tendo's every word and movement. As soon as the chocolate reached the desired temperature, Tendo guided Y/N's hands to remove the bowl of chocolate from the heat. Tendo grabbed Y/N's waist and guided her a few steps to the side, leading them to the open counter space next to the stove.
"Now," Tendo explained, "add the rest of the chocolate and stir. Continue stirring until the chocolate reaches 28 degrees, and then place it back on the heat until it reaches 32 degrees." After Tendo finished explaining this, he took a step back to put distance between their bodies. Now watching Y/N follow his instructions. Y/N did as she was instructed but found herself missing Tendo's body heat.
Tendo continued giving instructions until both the chocolate and cakes were in the molds. "Perfect!" He praised. Now that they were finished Tendo could finally do what he had wanted since they began.
"Now," Tendo's voice returned to his playful nature. "I think someone owes me a thank you kiss."
Y/N nodded and agreed before she processed what Tendo had just said. Her face nearly turned the color of Tendo's hair. "Wait, what?"
Tendo grinned down at her. "A thank you kiss." He used his pointer finger to tap Y/N's lips. Tendo quickly closed the gap between them and said, "I'm waiting."
Hesitantly, Y/N reached out. Placing one hand behind Tendo's neck and the other on his cheek. Why was she so nervous? Y/N knew she wanted this just as bad as he did. Finally, Y/N pulled Tendo's face closer to hers.
The moment their lips brushed, tingles shot through every inch of Y/N's body. Tendo grabbed Y/N by the waist and pulled her against him, locking her in a kiss. As their lips moved against each other, a burning fire filled Y/N. She couldn't get enough of this intoxicating moment, and neither could he. Despite only knowing him for a few months, Y/N knew she was in love. And based on the way Tendo was kissing her, Y/N knew the feeling was mutual.
After what seemed like minutes, the pair pulled away. "Satori." Y/N's face was flushed and her breathing heavy. Tendo grinned and pulled her back in.
