Avoiding my mother this week has been harder than I thought. I'm just glad that I've got to hang out with Miguel twice and spend some girl time with my sister. But any chance that she gets she's on my ass about making time for lunch.
Like now.
"Tomorrow is Christmas, and I wanna get last minute things done." I give her a fake excuse. All my gift shopping and wrapping has been done.
My mother huffs. "Don't start with me Daisy. I have asked you politely to make some time for lunch."
I roll my eyes. "And I have politelydeclined."
"Must it always be a damn argument with you?!" My mom scolds, slowly losing her patience. "You're so damn selfish."
Of course she blames me. She knows how much I hate her superficial friends. I don't wanna go to some fancy ass restaurant to order an overpriced, dry salad while listening to them talk about meaningless shit that I don't care about.
I have zerointerest in becoming like my mom.
"Wow! I'm the selfish one?" I raise my voice.
Of course my dad as always comes to the rescue. He hates all the arguments and back and forth between my mother and I.
"Daisy," He says my name softly. "Baby, why are you shouting?"
Aggravated, I rub my temples. "Because she's pushing me. I already told her that I'm not going to lunch with her and her friends. I simply have no interest!"
"It's the least you can do!" She says firmly. "After everything you put me through! Embarrassing us, running around all over the city with that boy!" The way she delivered that line with so much hate. "Your father is a very important business man and his family has to be in top shape. Yet here you are, still trying to humiliate and embarrass us with all of our friends!"
My dad puts his hand out, signaling my mom to stop.
But it's me who talks now.
"Fuck all your friends! You think that I give a shit about what those snobby people think?" I shout. "You have always been so goddam worried about your social status instead of being a real mother!"
She slaps me across the face.
"Cattleya!" My dad scolds.
But my mother doesn't care. Her face is red and full of anger.
I reach up to rub my cheek, still stinging from her hard slap. "This is the last time you put your hands on me." I say through gritted teeth.
Not backing down my mother huffs. "Or what! I am your mother, have more respect."
