25th march 2023, evening
melbourne, australia

"livvy, you ready for dinner?" oscar knocked softly on olivia's room door. the brunette opened it with a smile.

"almost." she wandered back to her vanity, putting on her earrings and last minute accessories. she wore a black tube top with blue jeans and sneakers. her makeup was light, nothing too fancy since it was only dinner with their families.

oscar sat on her bed, watching her struggle to clasp her necklace, "need help?"

"please." olivia turned in her chair to pass the necklace to the aussie. oscar stood up behind her, he smiled at her through the mirror and she smiled back while pulling her straighten hair to the side.

oscar looked at the necklace in his hand, "is this the necklace my mum gave you on your 18th birthday?" the australian could vividly remember tagging along with his mother to buy her the gift. olivia smiled, remembering when she got it.

"it's always been my favourite one." she looked at it through the mirror. it was simple, nothing too fancy, with her birth flower on it. she absolutely adored it.

oscar smiled down at it. he had never told the girl but the gift was really his idea, he had dragged his mum to the mall to buy it after spotting it a week prior while at the mall with the brunette.

oscar wrapped the thin silver chain around olivia's neck, the tips of his fingers lightly brushing her bare shoulders. olivia held the flower pendant, a gladiolus, to her chest feeling a tingling where oscar had touched her.

"thank you." she muttered, though it was almost a whisper. the silence in the room was strangely tense, the brunette avoided eye contact as she grabbed her bag and started heading out of the room, taking a deep breath. "we're off guys, see y'all later."

caleb and delara hummed some sort of acknowledgement as she left out of the apartment, oscar in tow right behind her.

the car ride to the piastri house was also silent, but this one was more comfortable. near the end, the pair started humming along to a maroon 5 song playing on the radio.

"have you had enough, sweetie?" nicole, oscar's mother, motioned to olivia's plate. olivia nodded.

"oh, let me help with that." the brunette stopped the elder woman from taking her plate, instead taking it to the kitchen herself.

oscar, who was delivering his own plates to the sink, smiled as she approached. "had enough?"

"yeah. god i forgot how much i love mama piastri's cooking."

"you live like 15 minutes from here. you should come for a meal more often." oscar leaned against the counter, crossing his arms over his chest.

olivia rolled her eyes, "i don't want to inconvenience your mum, os."

the aussie clicked his tongue and waved her off, "you are never an inconvenience. plus she sees you like her own daughter, she wouldn't mind."

olivia bit her lip to stop from smiling. it was true, nicole piastri treated olivia just like her other three daughters ever since the brunette could remember. nicole was the mother olivia had never had.

the pair headed back to the living room, where all the adults had shifted after dinner. gabriel and chris, oscar's father, shared a beer while nicole sipped a glass of red wine.

oscar collected a soda for himself and olivia, his arm brushing hers as they walked through the short hallway. however, the pair shared a looked before reaching the living room upon hearing hushed whispers from the adults.

"have you heard back from maria sinc—"

the room fell silent when the two young adults entered, all eyes falling on olivia. the brunette furrowed her brows at oscar's mother, "what about my mum?"

olivia didn't know much about her mother, her father refused to talk about her. in fact, he wouldn't even say her name.

"oh no, honey, not your mother. this is a different person..." gabriel interrupted.

once again there was a tense silence that engulfed the room, olivia stared at her father trying to decipher something, anything, from his face but the older alvarez was expressionless.

"so, olivia i see you're wearing that birthday necklace of yours. when did you get that, what your 18th birthday?" chris cleared his throat, changing the subject and breaking the tension.

olivia broke her glare from her father, plastering a smile on her lips as she nodded as chris.

"oh god, 18. time really flies." nicole commented with a smile.

"i remember oscar begging his mum to take him to the mall so he could buy you that necklace." olivia blinked, a look of confusion at chris' words.

"no... nicole got me this necklace."

"no, no, sweetie, it was oscar. he even used his own money to buy it." the brunette turned to face her best friend, he was leaning against the living room entrance sipping his diet coke.

"why didn't you ever tell me you bought this?" she stepped closer. oscar shrugged, letting out a nervous laugh.

"i don't remember." he lied. of course he remembered. olivia's first boyfriend had gotten her roses and chocolates and even a dress she had been wanting for weeks for her birthday. he was embarrassed, the only thing he got her was a little necklace.

"thank you." she whispered as she enveloped him in a hug, laying her cheek on his shoulder, "it's the best gift i've ever gotten."
