Jungkook didn't sleep much. He spent most of the night thinking of a plan to get the truth from his father. Things had been going great between them so he hopes that this is just a misunderstanding. However he knows his father far too well so he's only preparing himself for that disappointment.
The next day is business as usual. Luna goes to work. Jungkook goes to the sparring room to train. It's not long before Minseok shows up inviting himself to act as Jungkook's trainer again. Jungkook puts on his best acting face and gets ready to do his best to get his father to talk. During a break in his workout he tries to get the ball rolling. He starts by chuckling to himself silently but obviously enough to entice his father to ask why he's laughing.
"It's nothing," Jungkook says after his father successfully took the bait. "I was just thinking of something Luna told me last night."
"What's that?" Minseok asks.
"She asked me if I ever thought of being king." He continues chuckling. "She said she overheard a coworker mention it while she was at work. For some reason they thought I could be king."
"And what did you say?" Minseok asks a bit too eagerly. Jungkook has him where he wants him.
"I told her it wasn't that easy. I forget she's a convert sometimes," he chuckles more. "I had to explain to her how that all works."
"Did she think you could become king after that?"
"I don't know," he shrugs. "She didn't say."
"Do you think you could?" Minseok asks in a slightly more hushed tone.
"I don't know. I never really thought about it."
"You never wondered what it would be like?"
"Well yeah, I think every kid has wondered what it would be like to be king."
"You said Luna's coworker was talking about you being king? So you have some public support?"
"I mean it's just one person." Jungkook is trying his best to continue getting the most out of his father, but for some reason this conversation is making him more and more uncomfortable.
"That you know of," Minseok says optimistically. "What would you do if you had lots of support from citizens?"
"That would be crazy," Jungkook says shaking his head. "Why would anyone think of me as a king? I've trained my whole life as a shield, that's just what I am."
"But haven't you wondered what it's like to be more?" Minseok leans closer to Jungkook with a sinister look of hope in his eyes.
"What's the point if it'll never happen?"
"There's always the possibility. You know there is."
"Are you suggesting I try?" This conversation is making Jungkook feel so dirty. Everything he knows his father is suggesting goes against the oath he took when he became shield. It goes against everything he worked his whole life for. To even think of doing something so treasonous makes him upset.
"I'm simply saying that you're the strongest vampire in this kingdom. You're the Medal of Honor recipient which helps a lot in getting public support. No one could beat you."
"It still sounds like you're wanting me to take a shot at it."
"I want you to recognize your potential, Jungkook."
"But I couldn't. No way I'd win if I tried. Are you just wanting to get me killed?"
"You think he could kill you? He couldn't provide any more help in protecting his father than I did. I've seen him in action and he's nothing compared to you."
