The chilly night air gushed through the small cafeteria in Jogeshwari and came to a standstill as it strolled past the table near the large window.
The fresh, soothing breeze swayed slightly around the table where the two brothers were sitting silently and gazed at their still forms.
The hot steaming coffee cups resting on the table infront of them remained untouched as both brothers kept staring blankly at the table. Arhaan sighed heavily and looked up at his brother in exasperation,
"Are you going to say it at all?"
Afzal raised his hazel eyes to meet his brother's questioning gaze,"I don't know how to tell you."
Arhaan laughed humorlessly at his words,"Seriously! You brought me all the way here only to say this. Fine! I will get it out of you. Tell me, this is about Nawal, right ?"
His brother nodded cautiously.
Arhaan continued,"She made Istekhara right?"
His brother nodded again.
"So you just have to tell me if it's a yes or no! It's that simple Afz.You didn't even have to bring me here.I don't see any point behind your actions." Arhaan spoke slightly enraged by his brother.
Afzal knitted his dark brows thoughtfully as he spoke with caution,"Look Arhaan, I didn't want you to be sad or unhappy infront of Ammi.It might affect her very much to see you this depressed. So I thought it was better to speak to you somewhere else. And before I actually tell you what the answer is, you need to understand well that whatever happens is for our own good. Its the Qadr of Allah and we have to accept it as it is.
Do you get it?"
Arhaan stared incredulously at him,"Does this mean.....?"
He trailed off unable to voice his thoughts.
"I am taking it as you already guessed the answer", Afzal spoke in his usual firm, determined tone.
For a moment Arhaan just sat still ,gazing at his brother's face as if the world had come to an end. Eventually his expression morphed into a pleading look,
"Please don't let it be what I think...."
His brother gently placed his warm hand on his cold, shocked one,"I am afraid it is what you think Aarhu. "
Arhaan swallowed hard as his eyes became clouded with unshed tears. Seeing the stern expression on his brother's face Arhaan knew he wasn't lying.
"But why? "He questioned in a hoarse voice, his eyes desperately searching his brother's for an answer.
Afzal sighed and squeezed his hand,"Aarhu ,she might have her reasons for the answer."
Arhaan looked away as his emotions got the better of him.
"This is why I brought you here.I understand that you like her a lot but....." Afzal was cut off as his brother spoke up in rage.
"Like? If only you knew how much I love her; not a single hour passes Afzal, after every Salah I pray for her, And you know what , since I made Istekhara I have been having dreams about her nearly every day. That we....that we are together. And now you are telling me she said no.Just like that?"
He blurted angrily and scrutinised his brother's face,
"Just like that, Afz?"
Arhaan repeated lowly staring straight into his brother's eyes.
"Arre mere bhai; please try to understand. " Afzal said, his face softening a little.
Arhaan gave a bitter laugh in response as he leaned back in his seat,"Kya samjhu mai? (What do I understand)".
