The sun was barely up in the sky, still filled with dark blue and the slightest hint of purple, as the Spy Racers hobbled into the garage. Yawning with their eyes half open, they collapsed onto the couch as Miss Nowhere approached them, seemingly wide awake with a pep in her step.
"Wipe the sleep from your eyes and look alive, delinquents!" She said, the volume of her voice blaring in their ears.
"Is there a reason you called us here so early?" Echo asked, being the only one in the group that was actually awake. Frostee's eyes were half lidded as he leaned against Cisco who was full on snoring. Layla did her best to stay awake but had a hard time with it as Tony's head kept falling onto her shoulder, him barely able to keep his eyes open let alone his head up.
"Of course there's a reason! You think I like waking up this early?" Miss Nowhere's voice raised.
"Kinda." Echo said.
"Never mind that! I called you here at this reasonable hour-."
"It's four-thirty in the morning!" Layla interrupted her.
"It's still dark out." Frostee added. Tony and Cisco just snored.
"It's a reasonable hour!" Miss Nowhere yelled. "Or at least it is for a good spy. Anyway, Gary has something to tell you." Miss Nowhere waited for him to chime in but he didn't make a sound.
After a few more seconds of silence, except for the occasional snore, Miss Nowhere turned to Garry, annoyed. "Say something, Gary." She ordered. The only sound that came from him was something that sounded slightly like a faint snore. Miss Nowhere pulled his sunglasses down a little to find his eyes peacefully closed. "Oh, not you too." She rolled her eyes. "EVERYONE WAKE UP NOW!!" She yelled, making everyone burst awake with a start.
"Wow! What? Where's the fire!" Tony shouted as he was suddenly wide awake, ready to jump to his feet.
"Calm down, Toretto." Layla said, putting her hand on his shoulder. Seeing that there was no fire or emergency, Tony settled back down next to her on the couch.
Gary fixed his glasses, letting out a small cough as he tightened his grip on his tablet so he wouldn't drop it. "Sorry," He said, clearing his throat. "I had a late-night last night." Miss Nowhere gave him a look that said she didn't care. "What were we talking about?"
"The news, Garry. Tell them the news!" She said.
"Oh, yes, the news." He said, briefly glancing down at his tablet. "Starting today we will have a new addition to our team."
"What? Why?" Echo asked.
"Does cooperate think that we're not good enough? That we need help? We'll show them we're good enough!" Tony said, jumping to his feet.
"Settle down, Toretto." Miss Nowhere said. "It's not because they doubt your abilities. Believe me, they'd never doubt the ability of a team I'm in charge of."
"Well then what's this all about?" Layla asked.
"If you'd let Gary finish." Miss Nowhere turned back to him, ensuring that he was in fact still awake. "Well finish, Gary!"
"Oh, right. The new addition to the team is only temporary. She is a new spy that we were tasked with training for a couple of weeks." He explained.
"Ooh, is the new spy a robot?" Cisco asked.
"No. She is in fact human." Miss Nowhere replied.
"Exactly what they'd say if it was a robot!" He whispered to Frostee.
"So, there's a new spy. Is that all we rushed here for so early in the morning?" Layla asked.
"Yeah, why couldn't this wait until a decent hour?" Tony asked. "Like twelve o'clock."
"Twelve o'clock is not a decent hour, you're wasting the entire day!" Miss Nowhere said.
"Whatever a decent hour is, if we're done here can we go back to sleep?" He asked.
"No!" She shouted. Letting out an annoyed groan that seemed to question all of her life choices, she rubbed her forehead for several seconds before continuing. "The spy that will be joining us is fresh out of the academy, meaning that she will be on her best behavior. That means I want all of you on your best behavior too."
"When are we not on our best behavior?" Tony asked. Miss Nowhere's eye twitched as a million different situations ran through her mind. Instead of getting into it, she decided to ignore his question along with his existence.
"Things around here have been pretty relaxed for a while." She sent a pointed look at Cisco who was halfway to snoring again. "So, until the new spy arrives Gary will be educating all of you on proper spy etiquette."
Everyone let out annoyed sounds of protest while Gary stood up straight with an excited look. "Common, guys. It's not as bad as it seems. You might even find you'll enjoy it!" He said. They only groaned more.
"Well, have fun with that!" Miss Nowhere said, beginning to walk away.
"Hey! Where're you going?" Echo asked.
"I- I got... stuff to do. Bye!" She said and disappeared.
"She never did like boring etiquette lessons." Gary said.
"So, you admit it's boring?" Layla said, raising an eyebrow. Gary cleared his throat, looking down at his tablet before carrying on with the lecture.
About four hours later, everyone except Tony was fast asleep as Gary finished up his lesson. "Wow, I never knew there was so much to this spy thing!" Tony said.
"I knew one of you would come around!" Gary said. "Oh, and Tony, I appreciate you not falling asleep like everyone else."
"Why would I sleep through something as interesting as this? Besides, I couldn't really sleep after you mentioned the murder drones." A chill shot down his spine as he thought about it.
"That was a fascinating operation. Of course, it was until the revolt." Gary said, looking off as he reminisced about the thought.
Suddenly the door to the garage opened, catching the attention of the only two currently awake. Tony stood up as Miss Nowhere walked inside with an unfamiliar girl behind her. She had dark hair, an attentive expression, and wore all black. But the most striking feature about her was her bright emerald-green eyes.
Tony approached her with a warm smile. "Hey, I'm Tony Toretto. Welcome to the family." He said, holding out his hand to her.
"So, you're the Toretto. I've heard a lot about you." She said, taking his hand and shaking it. "I'm Olivia."
"It's nice to meet you, Olivia." He said.
"It's nice to meet you too. I can't wait to get to know you more." She said, her hand lingering a few seconds after their handshake before letting his go. Her eyes moved away from him, looking around the room to find the other spies asleep. "I see you're an early bird too."
"Not really, I'm more of a lazy afternoon duck than anything." He said. She laughed.
"You're funny." She said with a soft smile.
"It wasn't even my joke, I kinda stole it." He admitted, scratching the back of his neck.
"Don't worry, I won't turn you in." She winked. Tony smiled.
While the two talked, Miss Nowhere marched up to the sleeping teenagers, her eyes narrowing. "WAKE UP!" She yelled, startling them all awake. "Are you kidding me? I leave you all alone for a couple of seconds and you're all asleep!"
"And where were you during Gary's boring lecture?" Layla asked.
"Hey!" Gary said but was ignored.
"I was doing something of more importance." Miss Nowhere said, placing her hands on her hips.
"Like what?" Echo challenged.
"Like picking up the new spy." She said. "And Echo, I can't believe you fell asleep. Out of all of you I'd expect you to be the one who would stay awake."
"What, I've already heard all this spy stuff before at the academy." She said. Miss Nowhere just groaned.
Wiping the sleep from her eyes, Layla noticed that Tony was no longer next to her on the couch. Looking around, she found him talking to a girl she didn't recognize. A weird feeling bubbled inside her stomach. She didn't know what it was but whatever it was, she didn't like it.
Getting up, she approached them with a forced smile. "Hey Toretto, who ya talking to?" She asked, standing close beside him.
"This is Olivia, the new spy. Olivia, this is Layla." Toretto said. Layla had completely forgotten what Miss Nowhere had said about the new spy until now.
With the best welcoming smile she could muster, she held out her hand. "Nice meeting you." She said.
Olivia shook her hand with a sweet smile that Layla felt looked fake. "It's nice to meet you too." She said. "I hope you slept in well." Her smile turned into a smirk as she glanced over at Tony who grinned slightly.
"I'm sorry you were stuck with Toretto here while everyone else was... preoccupied." Layla said, nudging Tony.
"Nonsense. I've heard so much about Tony, I've been looking forward to getting to know him more." She said, placing her hand on Tony's arm for a brief second. A brief second that felt like an eternity to Layla. One she wished would end fast.
It took everything in Layla to keep her expression normal and unbothered. "So, you've heard of how much of a reckless driver he is." She said.
"Hey!" Tony sent her a glare.
"Of course not." Olivia said. "I've heard about how he drove his car out of the top story of a building! And how he jumped through lava to save Mexico City!"
"Did you also hear how I had to drive through the lava to save him?" Layla asked, rolling her eyes.
"Common, Layla. Don't get upset that she likes me." Tony teased.
"I do like you." Olivia said, giving him a flirtatious smile.
"Looks like we'll work together great." Tony smiled back. Layla could feel her heart tighten, but she didn't know why. It was probably just because all the flirting was making her cringe. Yeah, that had to be it.
The other spy racers joined them, introducing themselves to Olivia. Layla was relieved that the awkward flirting was finally over. Watching it made her feel uneasy and want to throw up. Though Olivia wore a warm smile as she introduced herself to the rest of the spy racers, something did not sit right with Layla. The new girl seemed nice enough and pretty friendly, but maybe that was the problem. She was too friendly. Layla did not know why but it tore her up inside seeing Olivia look at Tony the way she did.
She forgot how long Olivia was going to be staying with their team, but however long that was, was already too long. She wasn't sure how she would be able to deal with Olivia. She just had to force a smile on her face and try to tolerate her. At least in a matter of time it would all be over and they would be able to go back to normal. She just had to hold on until then.
After the introductions, Miss Nowhere explained the first mission they would be going on together. It was a simple mission that would not take too long, but as soon as the mission started is was already off to a bad start for Layla. Oliva immediately offered up the idea of splitting up into teams and quickly volunteered to go with Tony.
Layla did not realize that her mask slipped until Echo pointed it out. "You good?" Echo asked.
"Of course, nothing's wrong." Layla said fast. Too fast.
"Really? Because you look like there's something bothering you." She said. "Does it have something to do with the new girl?"
"What? No." Layla denied. Echo raised her eyebrow, not believing her. "Okay, maybe I don't like how she just got here and immediately started bossing everyone around." Though Layla was not sure if she said that to convince Echo or herself.
"If you say so." Echo decided to leave her alone and focus on the mission. Layla tried to do the same thing but after a few more days of watching Olivia acting too friendly with Tony she couldn't take it any more. During the next mission, before Olivia had a chance to suggest splitting up, Layla beat her to it.
"Toretto and I will secure the top floor, the rest of you fan out." She said. Olivia held a look of protest but Layla did not give her a chance to voice her complaints as she grabbed Tony's arm and pulled him away with her.
"What was that all about?" Tony asked when they were alone.
"What was what about?" Layla asked.
"You've been acting weird ever since Olivia joined the team." He said. "Is there something going on I don't know about?"
"Of course not." Layla said. "Nothing is wrong and nothing is going on."
"Oh, maybe you're jealous." He said. Layla's heartbeat sped up at his words. "I know I'm fun to hang out with but you have to learn to share me with others."
Layla nudged him with her shoulder. "As if, Toretto." She rolled her eyes. He chuckled.
Layla felt good about finally being able to be alone with Tony for once, but something felt different. Since when did she care? Since when did she get so possessive of him? She didn't want to admit it, but she hated seeing him with anyone else. Specifically Olivia. She didn't know how to answer her own questions so instead she decided to ignore them. The weird feeling would go away eventually, right?
The answer was no. As soon as the mission was over and they all drove back to the garage, Oliva was back on Tony like fleas on a dog. They laughed and talked as she hung onto his arm. Tony didn't seem bothered by it, but Layla was. She was about to go over to them and break it up when Olivia suddenly excused herself and turned to Layla.
"Can I talk to you for a moment?" She asked with a sweet smile that made Layla want to barf.
"Uh, sure." She said as Olivia was already pulling her outside the garage where they would be away from prying eyes.
"So, how do you feel about Tony?" Olivia asked, her smile falling as a serious look spread across her face.
"What?" Layla said, caught off guard by the sudden question.
"You know what I'm talking about." Olivia said. "Do you like him?" The look on her face said that she already knew the answer to that question.
"What? Toretto? Of course not." Layla denied. But as the words left her mouth, she felt a strange tug at her heart.
"I see the way you look at him. You're not good at hiding your emotions." She said.
"I have no idea what you're talking about." Layla continued to deny it.
"So you're saying there's nothing going on between you two?"
Layla hesitated before answering. She didn't know why, but she did. "No." She finally said, hoping her voice sounded more certain than she felt.
Oliva smiled. "Good. There better not." Layla was caught off guard by the sudden shift in Olivia's voice. Though she was smiling, it looked more fake than ever, and Layla had a feeling she wasn't even trying to cover it up. "I'm glad there's nothing between you two. I was planning on asking Tony out and I don't want anything getting in the way of that."
Layla was not sure how to respond. Before she had time to say anything, Olivia stepped closer to her. "I don't want to see you anywhere near him. If there's really nothing going on, then it shouldn't be a problem." Before Layla could respond, Olivia gave her a fake smile and walked away.
Layla was not sure what to do. Did Olivia just threaten her? That was what it sounded like. She wanted her to stay away from Toretto, but there was no way she was going to do that. Now she was really pissed off. First Olivia showed up out of nowhere, then she clomped onto Tony, then started acting like she was in charge, and now she expected Layla to stay away from Tony. She was not about to let her tell her what to do.
Going back inside the garage, she found Olivia talking to Tony again. Planting a fake smile on her face, she walked over to them and placed her arm on Tony's shoulder. Olivia frown when she saw her but was quick to put her fake smile back on.
"Aren't you bored of just standing around, Toretto?" Layla said, watching Olivia's eyes spark with spite as she watched her speak. "Common, let's race."
Tony's eyes lit up as he smiled. "You're on!" He said.
"Ooh, I'd love to race too!" Olivia said. Layla's jaw clenched as she fought the urge to roll her eyes.
"You're welcome to join us, that is if you can keep up." Tony said, playfully challenging her.
"Oh, it'll be no problem for one of us to keep up with you." She said, sending a smirk to Layla.
"I won't need to keep up with either of you, I'll be miles ahead." Layla said, glaring back at her.
"Quit stalling, let's go!" Tony said, already running outside.
As they followed after him Olivia walked closely beside Layla. "What did I say?" She said in a low voice.
"I'm sorry, I don't believe I agreed to your little request." Layla said.
"I see how it is." Olivia said, her jaw tight and fists clenched. "But just so you know, Tony likes me, not you. He'll never be yours."
"We'll see about that." Layla said before she could even think about what she was saying.
By the time they got outside Tony was already impatiently waiting in his car. "Ready?" He asked once they were seated in their own cars. "3, 2, 1, go!" They all quickly sped off, all fighting to be in front. At first it started off like any other race with the three of them all battling to be in the lead, but Layla and Olivia quickly started a competition of their own as they began cutting each other off and trying to drive the other off the road.
They both almost forgot about Tony as the race became personal. They were too focused on not letting the other win. Tony sped up, trying to get around them as they constantly swerved around each other. He started to get the feeling that there was something else going on.
After nearly driving each other off the road several times, Layla and Olivia reached the final stretch of the race with Tony forgotten behind them. Layla sped up and cut Olivia off. Pressing a button, her car spat out a puddle of oil, making Olivia's car spin out. With a smirk on her face, Layla pulled far ahead, winning the race by a long shot.
When Olivia caught up and got out of her car she looked pissed. "What the hell was that?" She yelled.
"What? No one ever said we couldn't do that." Layla said with a smirk.
"No one said you could!" Olivia shot back.
"Well that's how we usually race. I'm sorry you can't handle it." Layla remarked.
When Tony pulled up and stepped out of his car, he found the two girls arguing. "What's going on with you two?" He asked, stepping in between them.
"You should ask your jealous little friend, Layla." Olivia said, folding her arms as she sent her a pointed look.
"Layla, what's this all about?" Tony asked.
"Don't look at me, look at your girlfriend." Layla said, this time not stopping herself from rolling her eyes.
"Girlfriend?" Tony questioned, confused.
"Don't be bitter, Layla. It's not a good look on you." Olivia said with a smirk.
"Don't be a sore loser, it's not a good look on you." Layla retorted.
"Common, Layla. There's no need for the two of you to fight." Tony said.
"You're telling that to me? Who's side are you on?" She asked, moving her glare from Olivia to him.
"Side? What side?" Tony asked, even more confused.
"Isn't it obvious? Why would he be on the side of someone like you?" Olivia told Layla.
"I'm not sure what's going on here but the two of you should just try to get along." Tony said.
"Sorry, Toretto. It's already too late for that." Layla said.
"Yeah, I don't get along well with people who don't play fair." Olivia said.
"The oil was kinda a jerk move." Tony said to Layla, agreeing with Olivia.
"So you are on her side." Layla said bitterly.
"That's what I said. Don't feel too bad about it, Tony just likes me more." Olivia said.
"Wait-." Tony started but Layla cut him off.
"Whatever, I'm out of here." Layla said, getting into her car and driving off before either of them could say another word.
"What's going on with Layla?" Tony asked.
"She just doesn't handle jealousy well. Come on, forget about her. We're all better off without her." Olivia told him.
"Don't talk about Layla like that." He said.
"What? It's only the truth." She said, getting confused as he sent her an angered look. Without saying another word, Tony got into his car. "Where are you going?" Olivia asked.
"To find Layla." He said and drove off. It took him nearly a half an hour of driving around LA until he finally found her parked on top of a hill with a great view of the Hollywood sign. The sun was just beginning to set, bringing smears of pink and orange to the dim blue sky as he parked his car beside hers.
"What're you doing here, Toretto?" Layla asked without looking at him as he leaned against her car next to her.
"I came to check on you. You seem upset." He said.
"Wow, you have eyes, congratulations." She said sarcastically.
"Wanna talk about it?"
"There's nothing to talk about." She insisted.
"And that's why you won't look at me?" He said. She still didn't turn. If she did then she might break. Olivia's words floated around in her head. It was obvious that he liked her, Layla knew there was nothing she could do about it. But why did she care? It wasn't as if she liked him or anything.
As soon as that thought entered her mind she knew it was not true. She did like him. That weird feeling that kept tormenting her each time she saw him with Olivia was jealousy. Now that she finally admitted it to herself, she had no idea what to do. Tony was right there next to her. If she were to so much as look at him all of her emotions would flood her and she would not be able to hold them back.
"Layla." Tony said, his voice softer than before and laced slightly with concern. "Look at me." When she still refused to turn, he placed his hand on her cheek and gently turned her face towards him. His eyes searched hers, looking for any hint of what she was feeling. Layla could not hold herself back anymore. Before she knew what she was doing, she leaned in and connected her lips with his.
The kiss only lasted a couple of seconds as Layla regained control of herself, realizing what she was doing, and pulled away. "Sorry." She said, stepping back. Feeling the embarrassment of the situation, she tried to walk away but he stopped her, grabbing her arms and pulling her back into another kiss.
Layla was surprised and confused but quickly kissed back. The feeling of his lips on hers felt amazing. For a moment it made her forget about Olivia and everything else outside of the moment she was sharing with him.
When they slowly pulled away, it all suddenly came back. "Wait, what about Olivia?" Layla asked.
"What about her?"
"Don't you like her?"
Tony looked at her, his eyebrows raised in confusion. "Why would you think that?" He asked.
"You two got along so well together and spent the past several days together." She said, looking down, refusing to meet his gaze.
"I was hanging out with her because she's new and she's not gonna be with us for long. I was just trying to be nice." He said. "I'd much rather spend time with you."
"Really?" She asked.
"Layla," He said, trying to get her to finally look at him. Slowly she looked up, her eyes meeting his as they peered at her with warmth. Slowly he leaned in, kissing her once more. "You're the one I'm kissing, aren't you?"
She smiled, wrapping her arms around him as she connected their lips once more. Butterflies exploded in both of their stomachs. She could never get enough of this, and neither could he.
The next day when they walked into the garage, Olivia immediately ran up to Tony, wrapping her arm around his. "Where were you yesterday? I started to worry when you didn't come back to the garage."
Tony removed her from his arm and grabbed Layla's hand. Olivia looked at him confused as her fake smile wavered. "Where I was is none of your business." He said as they walked past her.
"Wait!" She called as she caught up with them. "I was wondering if you'd wanna do something with me later. Maybe watch a movie or go on a drive." She said, not taking the hint that he was not interested.
"Last I checked you were here to learn how to be a good spy, not have fun." Layla said. "Your two weeks are almost up so I suggest focusing on that with the time you have left with us." Together, Tony and Layla walked away, leaving Olivia standing there in shock as she realized that the jealous one was now her.
