Chapter 22: Heart Skip

"Are you sure you can be by yourself with him? Last time you two were alone, you almost gave away our position with your yelling."

Andrew asks while Y/N carries a plate of food to Varian, visibly looking a little uncomfortable.

"Yeah, I got it, I have to interrogate him anyway if we are going to go forward with this. And he only trusts me." Y/N swerves around him and continues to the room.

Y/N slowly opens the door with the plate in one hand and a match in the other. With one swift motion, she slides the match on the sword she carries on the right side of her hip, lighting it up in the first motion. The room is engulfed in light as Y/N lights a single wall lantern, and Varian strains his eyes at the sudden light. He looks up and sees it Y/N, and immediately, his face lights up as if the events were a mere dream.

"Y/N I'm so glad you're here again, I've been wanting to talk to you."

"I've also been needing to talk to you about everything."

Y/N places the plate on the floor and scootches it closer to Varian. She sits down in front of him, and he scoots close to the food, beginning to scarf it down like it's the first thing he's eaten since being kidnapped.

"So how has everyone been since I 'died'?"

Varian's facial expression changed into a depressed one.

"Everyone mourned you for some time, I mourned you for longer, Rapunzel, and the others tried getting me to go on adventures with them. I never did. I was always in the lab trying to create something to bring you back because I didn't know what I had until I lost you, and I regretted not being closer to you and seeing how much you've suffered the past months since you arrived back in Corona." All the explaining that Varian is doing is boring Y/N, she has no intentions of knowing what exactly they've been feeling she just wants to know where Rapunzel is and any plans for the upcoming two weeks. Maybe she should have been a little more specific with her question and not had Varian go on this depressing rant about what he didn't do and what he tried doing. The only reason he was working on bringing her back was because he felt lonely without anyone around him after his little girlfriend abandoned him. "So please come back to us, leave Andrew and all this evil. They are no good, trust me. I've been with them before. Leave them and come back home, I promise I'll be by your side through everything. You won't have to be alone anymore. I promise to love you as much as you love me."

"Love you?? All the love I've had for you is gone. It died when I was thrown off the cliff and left to die, it started dying when you left me all by myself to deal with all my shit and no one wanted to help all because they wanted to make everything about themselves, it has been dying since the day I realized you'll never feel the same way towards me because all you cared and loved was stupid Cassandra and your Alchemy. No one else had room for your heart, not even me!"

Y/N gets closer to Varian and stands on her knees to make herself taller and more intimidating. Varian moves backward until his back is against the wall. Y/N slams both of her hands on the wall on either side of Varian's shoulders.

"So I'm never going back to the place and the people that never cared and appreciated me in the first place!"

Just as Y/N finishes her rant, Varian stares into her eyes full of sorrow, but a hint of something else she can't quite understand. As soon as she makes the connection of what the feeling is, he places both of his hands on either side of Y/N's cheeks and pulls her closer to him, crashing his lips onto hers. Y/N freezes in shock and doesn't know what to do. This is the first time someone has ever kissed her. The warm feeling of his lips resurfaced feeling Y/N thought she buried deep within her or even killed. The feelings she hadn't felt for a few months. Love.

Y/N pushes Varian away and looks at him wide-eyed in shock, not knowing how to react to the kiss that was so unexpected. That shock is quickly replaced by anger, and without thinking, Y/N pulls out her makeshift sword and points the blade at Varian's throat.

"I SHOULD HAVE YOUR HEAD FOR THAT! YOU THINK YOU CAN PLAY WITH MY FEELINGS AFTER EVERYTHING YOU'VE DONE TO ME!"

The yelling alerts Andrew from his thoughts and he springs up from his spot and dashes downstairs to see what Y/N is yelling at this time. He sees Y/N is about to slash Varian's throat with her sword so in a split-second decision he runs to her and grabs her wrist to prevent any damage to Varian. He is meant as bait for Rapunzel and he can't under any circumstances be hurt or the whole plan would go down the drain. Andrew twists Y/N's wrist behind her back and the sword makes a loud clanking noise as it hits the concrete floor.

"What did I tell you about being alone with him, go take a walk Y/N." Andrew lets his stern voice out to show his distaste for the whole matter.

Y/N groans in anger and yanks her arm off of Andrew's grasp, she picks up her sword puts it back in its sheath, and stomps upstairs.

Andrew gives Varian an apologetic look before leaving himself. Varian is once again alone in this cold, damp basement. He didn't think Y/N would almost kill him for a kiss, but then again he swears he saw something in Y/N resurface like part of her old self wants to be seen and helped.

That night Varian can't sleep no matter how hard he tries, he is just staring out the window deep in thought. He hears someone walk towards the window but stops a few feet away from it. He stands up and walks towards the window trying to look out to see if it is someone walking by who can maybe help him and Y/N escape, listens closely and stretches as much as he can to get a glimpse of who stopped walking a few feet from the window. That's when he hears quiet sobs, he can't help but listen to the sobs only feeling bad for whoever is on the other side.

"Why? Why is all this happening? After I decided to destroy Rapunzel and her friends for turning their backs on me all of a sudden Varian loves me. Why now after I plan on ending myself after the kingdom is taken over, I can't keep living like this when I'm a danger to anyone that comes across me."

Varian's heart drops and his blood runs cold. That voice is Y/N, and she plans on killing herself after Rapunzel and her family get dethroned, all because she believes she's a danger to everyone. He has to stop this she doesn't know what she's doing.
