“I’m sorry you had to hear all of that” Lucas sighed pulling out of the driveway

“Don’t worry, my parent’s fight too” I said lightheartedly

“No, this is different. It’s like everything becomes an argument with them and it’s…fine” He immediately cut himself off, “It’s fine. Just adult arguments”

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah! Parents fight all the time. They’re old” Even though he was acting casual, it seemed so forced

“Is there~”

“No. I said I’m fine” Lucas said this quietly but with authority

“Okay…”Now things were getting awkward

“How about a song?” He said pointing to his CD rack

“I wonder what to choose” I said tapping my chin. I finally decided on an Icona Pop CD and immediately began jamming to the music

“I don’t care, I love it!”

“I don’t care, I love it, I love it!”

“Ashley, stop! The pedestrians are watching” Lucas laughed lightly tapping his hands on the steering wheel.

“I won’t stop until you sing with me” I screamed rolling the window down lower

“I got this feeling on a summer day when you were gone”

I looked at Lucas expectantly. He sighed and rolled his eyes

“I crashed my car into the bridge. I watched, I let it burn” Lucas screamed thrashing his head

“Tell me that didn’t feel great” I laughed like a mad person

“Yeah, it felt pretty awesome” He said with a twinkle in his eyes.

“You’re from the seventy’s but I’m a nineties chick!” We both yelled together and soon Lucas had to stop the car on the side of the road from laughing too much.

“Gosh, I better get you home” He said trying to catch his breath. Once we got to my house I undid my seatbelt and was ready to get out of the car when Lucas lightly tapped me

“Thanks, Ash” He smiled a bit

“For what?” I grinned, confused

“For making me forget everything else” He squinted like he didn’t fully understand the meaning of his own words but that didn’t stop my stomach from doing this little flutter thing. Was I getting stomach flu?

“It’s no problem, Lucas. What are friends for?” I laughed playfully punching his shoulder.

“Yeah” He said his smile instantly vanishing off his face, “I’ll see you tomorrow” he said briskly

“Um, okay” I tried for a smile and closed the door. He backed out of the driveway and I could see him shaking his head as he changed gears. Did I do something?

I walked into my house and began humming the tune to the song as I put my keys into the bowl near the door.

“I take it your little study date went well?” Derek said getting up from the couch with a bowl of chips, “Ew, those are two words that shouldn’t be put together”

“Then, don’t. It wasn’t a date” I took my shoes off and put them in the closet.

“Does he know that?” Derek raised his well groomed eyebrows
