"I'M SUPPOSED TO DO WHAT?"

Valerie almost choked on her cereal. Steve sighed, sitting down next to her at her dining room table.

"The alternative is hitting his head really hard,"

"Scientifically, that would probably work better."

"Do you not want to do it?"

She took a deep breath. "I'm just nervous. You're assuming he feels something for me he might not,"

"I'm not assuming, Valerie. I know how much he...feels for you,"

"What if it doesn't work?"

"Then we hit him in the head really hard." He chuckled.

"When do I start?"

"Tony wants to meet today to discuss it. Fury's coming in too,"

She shivered. "He scares me,"

"Yeah, me too,"

"No, he doesn't,"

He laughed. "Okay, maybe he doesn't."

She threw on a sweatshirt and followed Steve out of her apartment. She fidgeted with the sleeves as she walked into the conference room, finding everyone waiting for her.

"Dr. Harris," Fury greeted. "You look a little rough around the edges there,"

She blushed from embarrassment at what he was referring to. This morning when she looked in the mirror, she saw a bruise forming around her neck from Bucky's hand. And not in a good way.

"Should've seen the other guy," She awkwardly cracked a joke.

"So, what's your plan, Stark?"

"Valerie is going to visit Barnes in his cell and see if she can't make some progress with him. It may take a little bit, but I'm pretty confident in her abilities,"

"Wow, thanks, Tony," She smiled.

He shot her a reassuring thumbs up.

"Safety precautions?" Fury asked.

"The cell is pretty much unbreakable. But we'll have cameras on her. I'm still working on the audio, but I'll have it up and running soon."

"I don't think I wanna hear it anyway," Sam muttered.

"Yeah, gross," Nat smirked.

Valerie rolled her eyes, shaking her head at her friends.

"In the meantime, I'm locking the tower back down. I've deleted everyone's access to the building as a safety measure. After Fury leaves, we're going dark. And Valerie will work with him for as long as she needs to."

"And we'll be running point on locating MONA," Steve added. "Everyone can help with something. If they sent him here really to kill Valerie, that might be a smaller part of something bigger planned."

Everyone nodded.

"Everyone has their assignments," Fury spoke. "Hop to it, Avengers."

Valerie felt a warm feeling inside her stomach as he spoke. She felt like a member of their team. Not that she wasn't in her own useful way, but something inside her felt proud to be a part of it.
