"ORDER!"
Tony banged his plastic gavel against the glass tabletop—a ridiculous purchase he swore wasn't his idea, though no one believed him for a second. The sharp clack barely cut through the noise. The Avengers kept talking, trading jokes and side conversations, openly ignoring his self-appointed authority.
At the far end of the table, Valerie sat in a sleek swivel chair, hands folded neatly in her lap, the picture of patience.
"This better be worth my time, Stark," Natasha drawled, her raspy voice carrying easily over the chatter. She leaned back in her chair, arms crossed. "Rogers and Vision were about to have a ping-pong showdown. I had money on the synthezoid."
"It's true," Vision added matter-of-factly. "Though perhaps Mr. Rogers could use the delay to reconsider his odds."
Valerie couldn't help it—laughter slipped out before she could stifle it. Steve shot Vision a look, making a dismissive pshh sound as he flicked his hand through the air.
"That is about as close to trash talk as I think Vision is capable of," Sam Wilson grinned.
"Well, as interested as I am in your extracurriculars, this meeting is actually of importance," Tony assured, turning the projector on at the front of the room.
"Are we debating what temp to keep the AC at?" Nat retorted.
"No, you all are getting new roomies! Say yay," He sang.
"Who?" Bruce asked. "And please don't say Thor, last time he visited he destroyed my bathroom. In all manners of speaking. If he does, he cannot summon Mjolnir. End of story."
Laughter erupted as the team recalled the infamous incident of Thor summoning his hammer straight through several walls—right into Banner's bathroom—because he'd been bored on the toilet. Valerie had never met the god personally, but his reputation for chaos clearly preceded him.
"No, Thor's still snoring away in his royal palace," Tony cut in, smirking. "But! We are now the proud owners of—drumroll, please." He paused expectantly, tapping the table.
The team only groaned and rolled their eyes.
"No? Fine. Mr. Bucky Barnes!"
Steve's smile spread before he could contain it. Sam clapped with exaggerated slowness, the sound dripping with sarcasm, while Natasha only shook her head as if already exhausted.
Valerie sat back, absorbing the name. Bucky Barnes. She'd heard it in passing, always wrapped in heavy stories—Steve speaking of him with unwavering loyalty, Sam with a touch of disdain. To Valerie, he was more myth than man, a figure whispered about in fragments of war, blood, and shadows.
"Mr. Barnes has completed his solo mission to eliminate the last HYDRA operative and is ready to return as a regular member of the team," Tony announced with a flourish, like he was introducing a contestant on a game show.
"I, personally, see this as a positive development," Vision remarked, his polite smile unwavering.
"That's because you haven't met Bucky," Natasha scoffed, arms folded. "He's an excellent fighter, yes. But he's also kind of a dick. No offense, Steve."
