THIS COULDN'T BE HAPPENING.
Valerie yelled the thought in her mind as the team sat around the conference table arguing.
"He'll be just fine," Steve assured for the third time.
"We can't risk anything on these missions, Rogers," Tony shook his head.
"I hate to say it, but I agree with Tony." Nat spoke up. "If anything goes wrong, it could cost us the mission and all available intelligence."
"We're also not leaving him behind alone with Valerie." Sam sternly said. "No way,"
"Again, he's been fine in training. Everything that happened was just a blip." Steve argued.
"A fucking dangerous blip! We can't trust that he won't just switch back on!"
"I'm right here." Bucky muttered. "And it doesn't work that way,"
"This isn't up for discussion. Barnes will not be apart of the mission, end of story." Tony whacked his stupid fake gavel on the table, depleting all hope Valerie had for a few days of peace.
"Then I'm staying behind," Sam replied. "You cannot expect me to believe you'll leave the kid behind to protect her against him,"
"Ouch," Peter mumbled.
She shot a reassuring smile his way.
"No, unfortunately we need him on this mission." Tony sighed.
"Unfortunately?" Peter repeated.
"Cap'll stay back."
This caused another uproar.
"We need him on the mission too, Tony," Rhodey shook his head. "Hell, we need everyone,"
"Rogers is the only one who can handle Bucky best,"
"Again, I'm right here."
"He's right." Wanda agreed. "Steve is Valerie's best chance if, and only if, something were to happen."
"We'll leave tomorrow morning at dawn, and I do not want to hear another word about this. Dismissed."
Valerie stood up, immediately walking over to Peter. Mostly everyone filed out of the room, making comments either under their breath or directly to each other. She rubbed Peter's shoulder as she slung an arm around him, glancing back at the conference room.
She stopped when she noticed Bucky had stayed behind with Tony, appearing to argue with him. Because of the sound-proof glass room, she couldn't hear his words, but she'd bet anything he was arguing to go on the mission. As she continued to watch the conversation escalate, her heart sank. He truly would do anything to get away from her. She turned back and continued walking with Peter.

The next morning, the team was gone before she woke up. Admittedly, she didn't make as much of an effort to see them off, since there wasn't really a reason to. She dreaded starting the day, knowing the only faces she'd see on the team floors were most likely going to found together. She wanted to do her best to avoid him, but she didn't need to avoid Steve. He was her only choice for entertainment, after all.
She worked in her office for the majority of the day, walking the line between hoping Bucky would come see her and hoping she didn't see him at all. She drowned herself in running trials for Peter's new serum as her speaker softly played instrumental music throughout the lab. She became so invested in the work she almost didn't hear the knock on the doorframe.
