December 24th, Night Parade of a Hundred Demons...
Yuta sat hunched over at his desk in the silent, dimly lit classroom, his gaze unfocused as he muttered disjointed words. He seemed completely absorbed in his thoughts, oblivious to the world around him.
Suddenly, the tranquillity was shattered by the forceful bang of the door being kicked open. Startled, Yuta bolted upright in his seat, his heart racing. As he struggled to collect himself, he locked eyes with Maki, who stood framed in the doorway, a determined expression on her face. "Maki-San," Yuta said in a welcoming tone.
"What are you doing here? Classes are cancelled for the week." Maki asked.
"Well, I just felt kind of restless," Yuta said, chuckling. Maki walked into the room and gracefully took a seat on the desk, crossing her legs. Yuta added, "No one in the dorms is around, either."
Maki replied by explaining, "That's because the second-years were dispatched to Kyoto earlier. Toge and the third- and fourth-years are in Shinjuku as backup. The principal really likes Panda, too, so he's probably with Toge." as she rested her hand thoughtfully on her chin.
Yuta responded with a smile, his gaze fixed on the ground as he said, "I see."
Maki observed Yuta for a moment, deciding to be blunt; she told him, "Ask."
Yuta quickly turned his head to face her, surprised. "Huh?"
Maki, with a hint of exasperation, inquired, "You've been curious, right? About why I'm a failure." while glancing off to the side.
Yuta blurted out, "Well, um... yes."
Maki sighed; she again looked off to the side, telling him, "My family, the Zen'in clan, is one of the elite families of jujutsu sorcerers known as the three major clans. Do you know what the minimum requirement to be a jujutsu sorcerer is?" she asks.
Yuta, unsure of the answer, asked her, "Huh? What is it?" He placed a hand over his mouth.
Maki, realizing this, takes it upon herself to explain. "It's being able to see curses. Ordinary people can sometimes see them in special circumstances, like at death's door, but I can't see curses without these lame glasses. The cursed tools I use are already imbued with cursed energy. It doesn't come from me. Though, thanks to that, I got out of that family. The food was awful, the rooms were small, and it was crawling with old men I didn't even know. It seriously sucked!" Maki recounts, her frustration mounting as she recollects the minute intricacies of her former clan.
Yuta had a sudden realization about Maki's demeanor, causing him to glance down at the floor for a brief moment. When he lifted his head to meet her gaze, he inquired, "Why are you still a jujutsu sorcerer, then?"
Maki briefly smiles, explaining why, "Because I'm spiteful." Smiling at Yuta, I'm going to make the family cry when I return to them as a grade 1 sorcerer who can't see curses! Then I'll crush the Zen'in clan from within!" Maki declared.
