Just ten minutes had passed since Goku Black, the original Zamasu, had vanished into your own modified version of the hyperbolic time chamber. Standing there patiently, your hands clasped in front of your lap, you gazed at your reflection on the serene surface of the lake. Your emotions were transparent, displaying worry, relief, and fear. It was a troubling mix, but you held onto the hope that by undertaking this task for the original Zamasu, everything would eventually resolve itself.
Suddenly, a pair of arms enveloped your midsection with tenderness and warmth, instantly recognizable as belonging to the green-skinned Supreme Kai. Tilting your head back slightly, a soft smile graced your lips as you met the gaze of your Zamasu, his grey eyes filled with love and curiosity. "What are you doing?" he asked softly, and you leaned back against him, your hands gently caressing his arms. "I'm helping... helping Black rediscover himself," you replied, your voice filled with determination.
Zamasu's frown deepens as he gazes at his own reflection in the lake, his grip on you tightening. "It seems like you're always the one having to fix his problems, every single time..." he mutters, his lips brushing lightly against your neck, sending a shiver down your spine.
You squeeze his elbow gently, a moment of silence passing between you. "Technically, it's my fault that he's going through this. Both of you, actually," you say quietly, lowering your gaze to the blades of grass beneath your feet.
Zamasu looks at you, straightening up and pulling you closer. "You should not blame yourself for anything that has transpired. In fact, you shouldn't blame yourself at all. No matter how you see it, it was his actions that caused all of this," he says pointedly, his eyes locked with yours. "Zamasu, both of you are different versions of yourselves from different timelines, brought together because of me... And because of me, both of you are suffering in some way," you mumble.
Zamasu gently turns you to face him fully, his hands cradling your cheeks. "Y/N, you are not responsible for the suffering that either of us endure. Black is simply a bitter version of myself, unable to experience the love and bond that we share," he reassures you, his touch comforting. You lean into his hand, feeling the warmth of his thumb wiping away a stray tear that had escaped.
"We have grown together, built a life, and started a family. Black will never accept that, and it drives him to be a threat," Zamasu continues, his voice filled with frustration towards his other self. "He may be intentionally trying to drive a wedge between us, longing for a taste of true love that he can never truly experience due to his selfishness."
You shake your head, unaware that Black has emerged from the lake chamber, completely dry despite being surrounded by water. "Zamasu, Black is hurting more than you realize. We can't simply condemn him for loving me as deeply as you do... That's why I believe it's my fault that all of this is happening," you repeat, your voice filled with guilt.
Zamasu's gaze intensifies as he glares at Black, his voice firm as he continues speaking while you keep your gaze fixed on the ground. "Y/N, you must never blame yourself for any of this. If it weren't for Black's selfishness, which escalated into his desire to annihilate the entire multiverse of mortals in his own timeline, you wouldn't have been burdened with dealing with him or the manipulated version of myself."
You bite your lip sadly, about to interject, but Black beats you to it, surprising you. "It's convenient for you to shift the blame onto me, isn't it, counterpart? You were the weaker one, and I was forced to become a fragmented memory within your mind," Black sneers with malice. "You act as if you've become the favored one, getting everything you desired, while I am the outcast who ruins it all."
