Plot:
> As a child, Kyle Rayner's father left him. The only thing that kept him happy during his struggle was his father's comic books. This soon grows his metaphorical mask of a fun-loving youthful charm that hides his inner turmoil. In the vast expanse of the cosmos, the Green Lantern Corps, under the leadership of General John Stewart, stood as a beacon of hope and order. John's efficient work and military strategy had earned him this promotion, but it also came at a time when a shadow of darkness was creeping across the universe. Sinestro, the former Green Lantern turned renegade, had retreated to the desolate planet Qward, where he was secretly building his force - the Yellow Lantern Corps. The galactic war was on the brink of eruption, and Sinestro's alliance with the powerful Red Lanterns led by Atrocitus gave him a formidable edge. Though the Blue and Purple Lanterns had joined forces with the Green Lantern, John Stewart knew they needed more recruits to counter Sinestro's growing influence. However, the candidates they found were lacking, especially Guy Gardner, an arrogant and reckless Lantern who strained the unity of their team. Meanwhile, Carol Ferris, devastated by her husband's death, Hal Jordan, had been possessed by the powerful entity of the Violet Lantern, Star Sapphire. She sought vengeance until when she traveled across the galaxy, she went to Ysmault, the home of the Red Lantern Corps, to encounter Atrocitus.

> Returning to Earth, Kyle Rayner is currently dealing with his customers at work. He's now a freelance comic artist with a ton of imagination. When he returned home, Tomar-Re invited him to join The Corps. Instead of freaking out, Kyle is shocked in enthusiasm, unbelieving he would join the group he's been a fan of. In Oa, Tomar-Re introduces Kyle to John and The Guardians. The Guardians explain despite not having a warrior background, Kyle was seen to have potential and a strong indomitable willpower within. This decision resulted in Kyle being underestimated by many Green Lanterns, including Guy Gardner. John, meanwhile, was loyal to the Guardians that he was not interfering with their decision regardless of the reason. John is entrusted by the Guardians to train Kyle. Despite being unable to build a solid construction, Kyle has another way to channel his willpower. Being an experienced comic-artist is allowing him to have unlimited creativity. For instance, he created a giant robot instead of a shield to hold an attack, making a battle suit to strike against, and having a Kaiju for a massive showdown. In Ysmault, Carol is making a deal with Atrocitus. Atrocitus is cunning in that he uses Carol's sorrowfulness to influence her. Whispering in lies, He manages to convince her that The Green Lantern Corps was responsible for Hal Jordan's death despite her mistrust at first. An intense hatred towards the Corps has boiled inside her.

> Once after his training session, Kyle had a chat with John during his break. John tells many things about his past, including his experiences with The Justice League. Kyle is so imaginative to wonder how it feels like to be a part of them. However, their times soon were interrupted as unknown objects entered Oa's atmosphere. It was a living being of the planet Thanagar named Shayera Hol, the planet inhabited by the half-bird-like creature. Shayera was badly injured, while explaining that her planet was attacked by The Red Lanterns and Atrocitus had slaughtered many of her people. Guy Gardner insists on refusing her since he knows the potential of being trapped. But John replies by not judging first before they observe it. They arrive in Thanagar and are horrified by its massacres. Atrocitus was seen slaughtering some of the people. John's orders remain in position, however, Guy is so reckless that he disobeys him before they eventually get ambushed. This soon became worse as an outraged Carol Ferris arrived and launched a massive attack on them. John recognizes Carol and takes the initiative to talk. However, her hatred has blinded her. In a twist of fate, Guy Gardner's impulsiveness during the battle unbeknownst has led him down to the dark paths, falling him under the sway of the Red Lantern energy. His rage and anger made him a formidable foe, while slowly revealing to become a pawn in Atrocitus's secret plan. Beaten and lost in the battle, John and Kyle soon realize the dire situation they are in. Combined with two other Lanterns - Blue and Purple, as well as some Thanagarian survivors. John takes a leadership role to unite them against the common threats. John devises a solid strategy before he launches an attack in Qward.
