Me and Lily spent the afternoon cleaning and prepping dinner. I didn't have the heart to tell her that Crowley didn't need to eat. She was desperate for the food to be perfect.
I had expected him to just appear in the middle of the living room. So I was surprised when there was a knock at the door at 7pm.
"I'll get it" Lily squealed, rushing to open the door.
"Good evening" I heard Crowley greet her.
"Hello Crowley" she replied "please come in" she lead him into our living room. The smile on her face was infectious.
"Grace" he smirked,
"Crowley" I replied, trying not to smile too widely.
"Please have a seat whilst we finish up" Lily told him.
He chuckled and lounged on our sofa, like he belonged there.
"I barely recognise this place" he noted,
"We needed a fresh start" I told him, unable to meet his gaze.
"I understand that" he sighed
Lily began to set the table.
"Is there anything I can do?" Crowley asked
"No you're our guest" Lily smiled
"You can pour the wine" I suggested, earning daggers from Lily.
He just chuckled and made his way across to the kitchen area to retrieve the wine and glasses.
"Huh" Lily commented "You know where everything is"
"I've been here a few times" he smirked, picking up on how little I'd told Lily about him.
I carried the plates to the table and we all sat down to eat.
I glances at Crowley, he was a demon, he didn't need to eat. But Lily didn't know that. I was anxious for his reaction to having his own plate of food.
"Well this look delicious" Crowley exclaimed, taking a bite of the food. My heart fluttered, he was eating to please Lily. And the grin on her face demonstrated he had made the desired affect.
"So tell me about you Crowley" Lily asked him, after we had all ate in awkward silence for a few minutes.
"What do you want to know?" Crowley asked "I'm sure your mother has told you plenty about me"
"She said you should have been my father" Lily blurted, unaware of the weight of that statement. I almost choked on my food and had to take an extra large gulp of wine. "But that's about it" she added, I preferred the awkward silence.
"Did she now" Crowley chuckled, winking at me as he sipped his own wine.
"Well for starters" he began "I'm the King of Hell"
"You're a demon?" Lily gasped, looking at me, I was aware I hadn't divulged that crucial piece of information. "so it's not just angels my mom has a thing for" Lily teased
"Oh no she has a fetish for the supernatural in general" Crowley added, making them both burst out laughing. I blushed horrendously and buried my head in my hands.
"Ok that's enough" I groaned "We're supposed to be talking about Crowley not me" But deep down I did love that they could be so playful and bounce off each other like this.
"Wait" Lily gasped, "if you're a demon, that means you don't eat" she blushed embarrassed.
"I do for you" he winked at her, taking another bite. This exchange was too much. He was too much.
They continued to get to know each other, whilst I just sat and enjoyed their interaction, joining in when I was invited to.
It felt natural, it was nice to have them getting on so well. It felt safe.
But obviously feelings like that didn't last long in the life we lead.
Out of nowhere there was a loud bang and the door flew open, crashing against the wall, thankfully it didn't shatter into a million pieces this time.
"Grace!" Lucifer yelled
"Lucifer what are you doing here" I groaned, making my way into the hall so I could see him.
"I was happy to give you the space and time you needed away from me" he hissed "But I will not be side lined whilst my family plays house with that demon!"
His eyes were glowing redder than I'd ever seen. He was furious.
"Dad what are you doing!" Lily yelled rushing to my side, I shielded her with my body "this isn't you!"
"I'm sorry sweetheart but it is" Crowley told her, coming to stand beside us "your dad is showing his true colours"
"I'll show you my true colours demon when I tear you apart and send you straight back to hell" he yelled
"Dad stop!" Lily yelled back, pushing past me to face him. I reached for her arm but she held her hand up to let me know she was ok. "You can't just turn up here like this and insult our guest"
Lucifer couldn't look at Lily, his deadly gaze was burning into me and Crowley.
"Dad look at me" she spoke softly, and appeared to get through to him. He squeezed his eyes shut and when he opened them his gaze had moved to Lily and his eyes had returned to their natural colour. He was breathing heavily, as if struggling to control himself.
"Lily you don't understand" he told her, his voice a mix of emotions "You don't understand what he's taken from me so many times before"
"He isn't taking anything from you" she sighed "you're pushing everyone away on your own", his face contorted at her response, considering the truth in her words. He let his hands fall from the door frame and paced the hall, fingers tangled in his hair.
"I just want us to be a family" he sighed "Like we talked about"
"I've told you only you can make that happen by showing Mom that you have changed and you're not just the devil" she told him. I was shocked by her words, she knew too much, I hadn't told her about what Lucifer had done, or about our conversation when I sent him away. How did she know?
"I'm sorry" he whispered and stormed off down the corridor. Lily closed the door and leant against it.
"Lily?" I asked, she wasn't making eye contact.
"I was going to tell you" she sighed
"Tell me what?" I asked, frustrated and hurt "Have you been speaking to him"
"He's my Dad" she sighed
"Lily we spoke about this" I groaned
"No we didn't" she interrupted "You won't talk about him"
"Maybe I should leave you two to talk" Crowley suggested
"No" we both said in unison
"We're going to finish dinner" Lily told us "and we're going to be honest"
