"Mom?" Lily called as she attempted to push open the front door the next morning to find it blocked by something. Or someone. I was still laying in a crumpled mess on the floor.
Lily managed to get the door open enough to peer through and gasped.
"Mom!" She exclaimed "Mom what's wrong?" I had managed to stop crying, but seeing Lily, my family, made the flood gates open again. I couldn't respond. I only sobbed and clutched on to her, the realisation that Crowley had but her at risk. The realisation that I was the reason why.
Eventually, she managed to pick me up from the floor and coax me into the living area so we could sit on the sofa rather than the floor.
"Talk to me," she whispered, stroking my hair. It was like role reversal.
"He's a liar," I whispered. "He lies and betrays and manipulates everyone to get what he wants. He doesn't care about the consequences as long as he's happy,"
"What's happened?" she asked, confused."I thought you guys were having a date night? How has it turned into this?"
"He knew Lily," I told her. "He knew where you were, and he created an elaborate plan anyway to make himself look like the selfless hero."
"What are you talking about?" she asked in shock."He saved me, "
"No, Lily," I told her, taking a deep breath to stop the tears. "He used you."
Crowley had been like a second dad to her, and I could tell this revelation was hitting her hard. Her brows furrowed, and her eyes glazed over as they filled with tears.
"I don't understand," she whispered. "He loved us,"
"He does," I replied, "and that's the problem." I proceeded to tell her everything I knew, and by the end, we were both sobbing again.
"Why would he do that?" she sobbed. "How could he do that to you?"
"I don't know," I cried. "In his own twisted way, he was doing it for me, to win me back."
"What are you going to do?" she asked
"We're over," I told her. "I can't trust him."
"But you love him," she objected
"It's not enough," I told her, voice breaking once again "God I love him so much, Lily, but it's not enough. I can't let him get away with this. I can't leave us vulnerable to his manipulation anymore. "
"I feel such a fool for treating him like my hero," she confessed
"Lily, that is not your fault," I told her. "He manipulated us both."
"I love him too, Mom," she sighed. "Why do the people you love hurt you the most?"
It broke my heart hearing her say that.
"I promise I won't ever hurt you, Lily," I reassured her
"I know," she attempted to smile. "I do too,"
Once we had stopped crying and managed to compose ourselves, it was mid afternoon. So I called Charlie and told her she needed to come over and to bring ice cream.....that sounded the alarm bells. She knew ice cream was the worst-case scenario.
"I am so sorry," Charlie sighed after we'd filled her in on what had happened.
"What for?" I asked her, and this was not her fault.
"If I hadn't said anything....." she started
"Charlie," I interrupted. "This is not your fault. I am grateful that you came to me with what was bothering you. I needed to know who I was playing house with"
"I wish I'd told you sooner," she sighed. "Before you got in too deep,"
"Charlie, I've been in deep with Crowley since I met him." I laughed. "Time wouldn't have made his betrayal any easier to swallow."
"You did the right thing, Charlie," Lily agreed. "You have nothing to feel guilty about."
"What are you going to do now?" she asked
"Well, I can tell you one thing," I giggled, taking the last spoonful of my ice cream and placing the empty tub on the floor by my feet. "I am absolutely done with supernatural men"
We all cracked up laughing.
"Right enough, men talk," Lily announced. "Let's watch trashy RomCom's and eat junk food until our tummies hurt."
We fell asleep on the sofa. The three of us snuggled up under blankets. This was the only love I needed.
**
The next morning, Charlie reminded me that I needed to tell the boys what had happened.
"I'm going to kill the red eyed bastard," Dean growled, as he and Sam replaced the Angel warding with symbols to keep out Demons, including Crowley this time, witches and other unwanted guests. I'd told them the Angel warding could go now. After all, Lily's Dad should be able to visit her at home, and it was about time Castiel was invited in.
"Grace, I'm so sorry," Sam whispered as he pulled me into a hug. "I know how much he meant to you."
"I don't know how I didn't pick up on it myself" Dean chastised himself "I didn't even realised I was being manipulated....I'm so sorry Lily" and he sunk into the sofa, head in his hands. Referring to how Crowley had influenced him the day they made the plan to save Lily.
"Dean, forget about it," Lily told him, placing a hand on his shoulder "No-one blames you."
"Crowley is the only one to blame here," I agreed. "He put Lily at risk. No-one else. " My voice broke, and I looked to the ceiling to try and stop the tears from falling. It was still so raw.
"It's ok to be upset," Sam whispered, arms still around me. That was enough for me to let go. I collapsed into his arms in tears. The warmth of a man I considered my brother made me feel safe enough to let go of my emotions. He just held me tight.
"Grace, you are officially banned from dating men," Dean announced, making me laugh as I blew my nose and wiped away my tears. "Supernatural ones in particular."
Just on queue, there was a knock at the door.
"Shit!" Lily announced
"Lily!" I exclaimed
"Sorry," she giggled. "I forgot Dad was picking me up this morning,"
"Talk of the devil," Charlie giggled....as I met her eye, and she realised her choice of words, we all burst out laughing. I slumped onto the sofa beside her, and she wrapped an arm around me.
