I took a stroll through the children’s ward on the way to the cafeteria. There were so many happy children here. I smiled at them all as I walked by.
I felt a tug on my jumper sleeve. I looked down to see a little girl, about 3 years old or so. She had cancer. You could tell by her appearance. She was still a beautiful little girl though. I looked down at her with a big smile on my face. She pointed to a room, probably hers.
‘’You want to go back? Come on then’’ I smiled and picked her up. She giggled and I walked back into her room. I set her down on her bed and she smiled at me.
‘’You can’t be in here’’ a nurse said, walking in quickly
‘’Oh, I’m sorry. It’s just-‘’ I looked around the room for anything that paid a resemblance to the girl’s name. ‘’Florie was just walking around outside. She pointed to this room so I carried her back in here, I swear I haven’t done or was going to do anything, I’m only here because my uncle’s dying’’ I explained
‘’Oh, I’m sorry about the confusion…and your uncle’’ I looked down and saw that Florie had been holding my hand for the entire time I had been talking.
‘’I have to go now, I have to go and find my little cousin, I might come and see you again soon though’’ I smiled at her and she smiled back. I kissed her hand and walked to the door. I waved at her and she waved back. That just proves how happy they can be.
I carried on my journey to the cafeteria. I pushed open the doors and inside was my cousin and a nurse. Levi was sat opposite her, they appeared to be playing a board game. I walked over to them from behind and tapped Le on the shoulder. He spun round to reveal his bright blue eyes and contrasting dark brown hair, he was adorable. Levi was born on the 4th of October and was currently 3 years old.
‘’Alice!’’ he squealed, hugging me, well, my legs. I picked him up and placed him on my hip.
‘’I take it you’re Alice Edwards?’’ the nurse stood up
‘’Yeah, I am’’ I replied
‘’I’m Kathy, from on the phone’’ she smiled slightly and we shook hands
‘’Oh right, that must have been a really tough job, telling me that…’’
‘’Yeah, it was… I hate having to do things like that, I always pray that nobody will get hurt so I don’t have too’’ she said awkwardly
‘’Where’s Daddy?’’ Levi said, grinning
‘’Daddy’s…urm, sleeping, and so is mummy’’
‘’When will they wake up?’’ he looked at me with puppy-dog eyes
‘’Well mummy won’t wake up, she’s gone to sleep up in the clouds and I think daddy might go there soon too’’ I said, biting my lip to stop me from crying
‘’Can we go and see them?’’
‘’Not in person, but we can go outside and have a look from down here if you like?’’ he nodded and I put him down and held his hand. I thanked the nurse and we walked out.
We were in the main reception when someone stopped me.
‘’Alice?’’ I turned to see my dad
‘’Jason’s-‘’ I stopped him
‘’Has he gone to sleep in the sky?’’ I said, gesturing to Levi, hoping he’d catch on
‘’Oh…yeah, yeah he has’’. I almost burst out crying there and then. In fact, I did let a few tears slip, but I quickly wiped them away, not wanting Levi to see me cry. My dad sadly smiled and I walked outside with le.
We walked to a patch of grass and laid down on it, facing the sky. I took Levi’s hand in mine.
‘’I think Daddy’s up there now too; you want to talk to them? They won’t reply though, they’re sleeping don’t forget’’. Levi sighed.
‘’Mummy daddy, Alice say’s you’ve gone to sleep in the sky and you won’t wake up. I hope when I go to sleep in the sky I’ll see you. Then I can tell you about everything I’ve done and what I’m good at. I can’t wait to see you again, soon I hope. I love you Mummy and Daddy’’.
I had tears rolling from my eyes. Bless him. It’s so hard to watch him be like this and having to tell him that his parents are ‘asleep’, when their really…dead.
