‘’Levi, wipe Jace’s face will you?’’
‘’Yeah!’’.
I stood in front of the mirror, admiring and adding the final finishing touches to my appearance. I was dressed in a loose fitting silk dress that came to just above the knee. It was a silver colour and had white birds printed around it. I also wore some white heels and a necklace. I walked back through into the main area of our hut. Michael had just emerged from the bathroom and Levi was attempting to wipe Jacey’s face clean, however failing because Jacey wouldn’t keep still.
‘’Come here you’’ I took over and Levi ran and jumped at Michael, who lifted him up onto his hip. I cleaned Jacey’s face and all four of us left for dinner.
We walked across the sand until we reached the restaurant. It was empty tonight, literally empty. There was nobody else here but us. All the tables were set out as normal, cutlery and plates, even the napkins were folded as swans on every single place. And yet there was nobody but us here. I shook it off and the waiter showed us to our table. We were seated right in the centre, with the view of the ocean directly in front of us. There was a lot more space around our table than any other.
We ordered our food and as suspected, it came within minutes. I wasn’t really in the mood for eating. I had either been feeling really hungry or just not hungry at all. I didn’t eat for an entire day the previous week, and Michael still didn’t catch on. He’s slow at things like that. I wondered if tonight was the night I should tell him. It would be nice for the boys to hear it too. I hope they take it well.
‘’Mummy I’ve finished can I go and play on the sand?’’
‘’Ye-‘’
‘’Uh, no, I need you to stay at the table tonight Le, remember?’’ Michael winked at Levi whose face went blank for a few moments, and then turned into a mischievous grin. Jacey started to giggle and I just stared at them all.
‘’More wine?’’
‘’Please’’. Michael poured me another glass and I took a sip. Levi was staring longingly out at the beach. He’d taken Jacey out every night on this holiday after the meal. We spend the days relaxing in the hut or on the beach. Michael’s taken the boys in the sea, and I’ve been in a couple of times, but I prefer the jacuzzi with the view from the bathroom.
‘’Excuse me’’ I stood up and wandered through to the toilets. I looked in the mirror and fixed my hair, applying more lip-stick also. Whatever it was Michael was planning, I suppose I was needed to be out of the way for it. I took it upon myself to leave so they could do whatever.
I walked back out and I don’t know how on earth it’d happened, or if I was just seeing things, but the entire restaurant was jam packed with all the United players and family. They all had food on their plates and were eating away as if everything was normal. I weaved in and out of them and back to the table. I sat back down just as the sun began to set. Michael wasn’t at the table. I looked at Jacey and he pointed to the beach before I could question his whereabouts.
I took a slow walk towards Michael and the noise behind me died down, leaving the boys behind me. Michael was stood with the feet buried into the sand. He hand one hand shoved into the pocket of his denim shorts and the other was on the back of his neck. I approached and gently touched his shoulder.
‘’Alice’’ He smiled and turned to me. Everything was silent apart from the gentle crashing of the waves onto the shore.
‘’Michael’’ I mimicked. He smiled and caressed my cheek softly with his hand. I reached up and held his hand on my own.
‘’Can I ask you something?’’ Michael stood now with both hands in his pockets. I stood with mine behind my back.
‘’Yeah, you can always ask me anything’’ I smiled, he laughed.
‘’Nah, it’s not like that this time’’.
He shook his head and turned to face the restaurant. The sun had gone down more or less and the stars lit up the skit, reflecting on the ocean that lay ahead of us. I gazed up into the sky and that was when I thought about Nicola and Jason. They were up there right now, I hope they’re happy with me. I hope they’re okay with how Michael and I have brought Levi up. We’ve done our best. I know they’d be proud.
‘’Le?’’
Levi came bombing across the sand to us, Jacey was slightly behind, a waiter was holding his arms, helping him to walk. Michael turned his back to me and bent down, whispering something to Levi. I watched closely and Levi gave Michael a hug and a high-five before standing next to Jace with a huge grin on his face.
What happened next?
‘’Alice, you can probably guess what’s going to happen next. I know it’s been a long time coming, a real long time, but for me, that’s what it’s all about. I’ve known you for so long and you’ve been my best friend for God knows how long. It makes me really happy that I’m able to kiss you and hold you can call you mine,’’
He stepped closer to me, resting his forehead against my own. My heart was beating so hard I was paranoid that it would shoot out of my chest. I felt butterflies in the pit of my stomach. Levi was stood looking up at Michael as if he was his hero. Michael’s eyes locked with my own, making me feel how I felt the very first time I kissed him.
‘’And for that reason, along with millions and millions more,’’
He got down on one knee and turned to Levi. It was then that I noticed all the boys and family were stood around us on the beach. My head had been to clouded up to even notice that anyone else but us four were here. Levi handed a red velvet box to Michael. He opened it and looked up at me with a smirk. Boy, I loved it when he did that.
‘’Will you do me the honour of being my wife?’’
I looked at him, my mouth was slightly a-jar and I had tears trickling down my cheeks. Michael was still on one knee, presenting the platinum ring with small diamonds embedded in the ring, and a larger diamond on the top. Jacey looked as if he was falling asleep so I knew I had to make this fast. Everyone was looking at me and I felt the seconds pass by.
‘’On one condition’’ I smirked back.
‘’And what might that be?’’ Michael bit his lip and a chuckles emerged from the guests.
‘’That you, Mr Carrick, will do the honour of being a daddy’’.
