We drove to the hospital in mostly silence, other than my mother’s random outbursts of crying and my father’s attempts to calm her down.

We parked up and walked inside the hospital. I took it upon myself to do the talking at the desk, since neither of my parents looked like they were able too.

‘’Hi, how may I help you?’’ the woman smiled sweetly

‘’Hi, I’m Alice Edwards, I got a call from Kathy not long ago? It was regarding Jason and Nicola Messer’’ I spoke, almost crying when I said their names. My uncle and auntie were really close to me. They took me on holiday with them when my parents were too busy with work. They never left me by myself or bored. They were such fun…

I remember a time when we were at the beach at the seaside…

‘’Come on, the water is great!’’ Nicola called out to me. I stood bluntly with my arms crossed at my chest. She raised her eyebrows at me. All of a sudden, I felt a pair of arms lift me up high in the air. They carried me towards- and straight into the cold water. I was then thrown like a beach ball into the water.

I rose to the surface with a huge smile on my face.

‘’Again!’’ I giggled

‘’Okay, one more time!’’ Jason said before carrying me out of the sea.

‘’Ah yes, just down here and then the door on your left, ward 12’’ she pointed in the direction

‘’Thank you’’ I simply replied. My parents reluctantly followed me as I tried to remember where the nurse said to go. I got to the door on the left but now where? Did she say ward 12 or 14? I can’t remember...there was so much going on in my head right now. It’s a surprise I can even function properly with everything that’s going on.

‘’Excuse me, are you lost?’’ a man in a long coat came up to me and snapped me out of my daze

‘’No, not entirely, can you tell me where Jason Messer is please?’’

‘’of course, just in ward 12 down there’’

‘’Great, thank you’’

‘’No problem’’ he smiled and walked off in the opposite direction. I walked down the corridor with my parents at my heels.

We eventually reached ward 12. I had looked at all the other patients that we had walked past. Children, adults, teens, old people. I hated hospitals so much. Everyone looked in pain. I always partly enjoyed the children’s ward though. Not in a mean way but because they all look so happy and seeing them happy makes me happy. It gives me the strength to carry on I suppose. I mean, some of them have serious illnesses but they still look like their having more fun than a normal child of their age. Their just so happy.

I knocked on the door and a male voice shouted ‘come in’, so I did.

I walked inside and I clamped my hand over my mouth when I saw Jason. He was battered and bruised. His face was scared and had cuts all over. My heart pounded against my chest as I examined his body. I didn’t want to see more but I had to. His arm was in a cast and so was his right leg. He had a bandage wrapped round the top of his head and his lip was cut open.

‘’What happened to him?’’ I said, literally crying

‘’The car collided with a truck that was speeding, it was entirely the truck drivers fault’’ the doctor spoke. I dreaded to think the fear and horror that was going through their minds as they hit the truck. It was all too much.

‘’Where’s Levi?’’ I asked weakly

‘’He’s in the café with a nurse. He wasn’t hurt too badly, just a few cuts, we didn’t want him to see his father like this…’’ I nodded understandingly. I walked over to Jason and looked at him. He looked wrecked. It didn’t feel right to see him like this. He was always his happy, cheerful self any other time I saw him. I wanted to run away from it all but I knew I couldn’t, for Levi’s sake. I bent down and placed a kiss on his cheek that looked least damaged. I then left my mother and father alone with him, knowing that that was the last time I was going to see my uncle.
