"Lukas!" Jesse and Petra came running back, their eyes shining with worry.
I finally had the courage to look down, and I sighed with relief. I'd caught him. He was standing there, on an ice block, in a one by one gap. I could see through the ice, and all I saw was darkness. I couldn't even see the bottom of the pit. How did this happen?
"Oh, thank goodness," I let out a sigh of relief that he was at least alive, and we could bring him to safety.
Lukas had his eyes closed, and he was trying to steady his breathing as he braced himself up against the wall of the hole in the ground.
"Woah..." He gasped, opening his eyes slowly, daring to cast a glance downward.
His eyes widened in shock and alarm.
"Woah is right," Petra agreed.
"How did this happen?" Jesse wondered.
"I'm not seeing any residual signs of redstone or anything else that could have triggered this," Olivia muttered, appearing to be deep in thought as she glanced around at our surroundings.
"That's... odd..." I muttered.
"Come on, let's get you out of there," Axel grunted, bending down and reaching for Lukas's arms, pulling him out of the hole.
"I was just about to suggest a potion of leaping, but that works too, I guess," Ivor shrugged.
"Are you okay?" Jesse and Petra asked Lukas, coming to stand on either side of him.
He didn't respond right away.
"Come on, we should get moving," I decided. "The faster we find Enderlord and get out of here, the less chance there is of something even crazier happening to us."
Jesse and Petra both gave me this look that said: 'seriously?!' and I sighed.
"But, I understand if you need a minute," I relented.
"Yeah," Lukas nodded slowly. "I think I'm going to go sit down over there for a bit."
He slowly walked over to a nearby tree and sat down, propping himself up against its trunk. Poor guy. I mean, Lukas wasn't as easily frightened as he used to be but- ah, who am I kidding, that would've phased anyone. Heck, it wasn't even me and I was still scared. My heart was still pounding, and my mind was still racing.
What if I hadn't acted in time? What if he had died? Then it would've been all my fault...
By now the rest of the group had dispersed around this clearing. Jesse and Petra stuck together, talking amongst themselves and casting worried glances in Lukas's direction every now and again. Soren was leaning up against one of the trees, trying to keep the fear out of his eyes, but even from this distance I could tell he was spooked. I didn't see Ivor. Where had he gone? Oh brother. Hopefully he was still close by. Olivia was still standing by the pit, studying it, and Axel was standing by himself doing absolutely nothing.
"Hey," I decided to walk over to Jesse and Petra to talk to them. "How are you guys doing?"
"Okay, I guess," Petra shrugged.
"That was crazy," Jesse put in.
"Tell me about it," Petra added. "We could've lost Lukas! Thank goodness you were here, otherwise, I don't know what would've happened to him."
None of this would be happening if it weren't for me... I thought about saying that out loud, but I bit my tongue and instead just sighed.
"Yeah," I nodded, turning slightly and letting my gaze fall on Lukas, who was still resting beneath that tree. "I'm sorry. It was very inconsiderate of me to just insist we keep going after something like that. I was just worried about the safety of the rest of the group. I didn't want anything even worse to happen to any of you guys."
