Episode 6: Kraken the Case!

We arrived in some sort of old timey marketplace. From the salty smell in the air, I could tell we had to be near the ocean. Seagulls flew overhead. Just one look around and I knew this wasn't a friendly place. Sketchy looking people were running every shop, with teeth that were either missing entirely or made of gold, some of them wearing eyepatches over one eye, with insignias of skulls and crossbones, some wearing feathery hats with similar insignias, some with hook hands, some with peg legs, some even had parrot pets. All of them had wicked grins and wild eyes, and large cutlasses strapped to their waists or behind their backs.

"Pirates," I breathed.

"What?" Jesse asked me.

"They're no good, sketchy people, the lot of them," I responded. "Don't make eye contact, and don't talk to any of them unless we absolutely have to. They're nothing but trouble."

"But maybe one of them saw Enderlord," Jesse concluded. "We should ask around."

"No," I stopped him. "Trust me, that's not a good idea. Enderlord can't have gotten too far away now. I know we took a little detour before following after him, but still, he can't be far. Even if he managed to get a disguise and blend in with all these people, he'll still stand out like a creeper in a hoard of zombies. All we have to do is look around for an abnormally tall man with soot colored skin, purple eyes, and strange purple particles floating around him."

No one seemed convinced by this.

"Well, just standing here isn't going to get us anywhere," Jesse pointed out. "Let's head that way."

He pointed down the way, towards the end of the boardwalk. We all started following after him in a single file line, glancing around occasionally for anyone that stood out or looked extremely suspicious. A few shady shopkeepers tried to lure us into their stalls, but I always turned them down with a 'Not today, thank you.' One of them was more persistant than the others.

"Oh, come on, now, there's got to be something you're looking for here," He insisted.

"Yes, but I'm afraid that's something you can't help us with," I responded, ducking out of the way as he tried to put his arm around my shoulder. "Now, let us be on our way."

"Your loss," He shrugged as we continued walking on down the way, avoiding chaos at every turn as some fights started to break out.

I ducked under a cutlass as it flew through the air, and its wielder was disarmed.

"We should get out of here quickly now," I decided, gently nudging Soren forward.

Jesse nodded and the whole group started picking up the pace. We emerged unscathed from all the chaos, only to find ourselves at the end of the boardwalk, the waves crashing against the support beams holding this place up. The water was too deep to see the bottom.

"Well, we know which way he didn't go, at least," I sighed. "He'd be a fool to go out there. Alright, let's head back and see if Enderlord went down this other way."

We all turned around, starting to head to the other half of the shopping district, but before we even took a step in that direction, four pirates leapt out of hiding, brandishing their cutlasses.

"Hey, would you look at that, Charlie?" One of them grinned. "There's some new faces around here."

"It's been a while since we've seen new people around these parts," The one named Charlie spoke up. "Most non-pirates know to steer clear of this area."

"Let's just see if they've got anything good on them," Another decided.

"Back off, if you know what's good for you," I warned them, drawing my sword.

"You think you can stop us with your dinky swords?" The fourth pirate jeered as the others drew their weapons as well.

"Try me," I challenged, glaring at them all determinedly.

"ARG!" The pirates gave a battle cry, charging at us.

The first one that spoke, presumably the leader considering the large feather in his hat, charged at me, but I blocked his blow, pushing him back. I decided, even though he was vulnerable in this time, that it was best to wait for him to attack again, and take him by surprise. He got up quickly, breathing heavily, and charged at me again, his arm held out by his side. I ducked underneath the blow, but he stopped himself before he tumbled over the edge, and spun around, with his arm outstretched, trying to hit me, but I was still ducking. As his arm came around, I saw my chance, and held up my own sword to block his, pushing his wrist back and disarming him.

He fell over backwards, barely avoiding falling off the edge of the boardwalk into the water below. He stared up at me, his eyes shining in the early afternoon sunlight.

"I won't kill you," I decided. "Messing with me and my friends was a mistake, but I think you learned your lesson the hard way. Take your weapon and leave."

"Hey, Jhonny," One of the other pirates spoke up. "This one over here had a journal. It could have clues to find tons of treasures in it."

"We got what we came for," Jhonny decided, standing up quickly. "Let's take it and run. And we'll feed these landlubbers to the sharks."

"Woah!" I gasped as Jhonny shoved me over the edge.

Thinking quickly, I formed a platform of ice in the air to break my fall, and everyone else's, as they were shoved over, too. The four pirates ran away and didn't look back, so they had no idea we survived. We all quickly climbed back onto the boardwalk. Getting Lukas's journal back was important, but should it really be something we devote all of our energy towards when Enderlord is still at large?

"We have to split up," I decided quickly. "Petra, Jesse, Lukas, with me. We're going to get your journal back. The rest of you, stay here, stay out of trouble, and keep looking for Enderlord."

"Got it," Olivia nodded.

"Okay," I began, turning in the direction the four pirates were headed. "Let's go catch those rapscallions, shall we?"

Petra, Jesse, and Lukas nodded, following after me as I charged back into the port market. There was too much chaos going on in the walkway for travelling down here to be affective. I formed four pillars of ice beneath Jesse, Petra, Lukas, and myself, catapulting us up onto the roofs of the shops. From up here, I could spot the group of pirates that took Lukas's journal not that far ahead.

"Thar she blows!" I exclaimed, picking up the pace, running across the roofs of the shops, minding the gaps and leaping over them.

The group of pirates turned left suddenly, heading down into a secret alleyway behind all the shops. I leapt across the boardwalk before sliding down, wanting to avoid having to walk through the chaos below as much as possible. The others still stayed close behind me. Jesse barely missed the jump, but Petra saved him before he fell.

"Thanks," He thanked Petra.

"Well, I wasn't just going to let you fall," Petra responded.

"Come on," I urged everyone to come stand beside me as I stared down into the dark alleyway. "They went this way!"

The four of us dashed down the alleyway, staying in a single file line, listening and looking around for any sign of the pirates that took Lukas's journal.
