Episode 4: Mazed and Confused
"It's getting late," Jesse noted as I closed the portal behind us, glancing up into the sky where the moon and stars were now the only light. "We should get some rest."
"Yeah, we'll do better once we're well rested," Lukas agreed.
"And it'll be easier to track down Enderlord without a bunch of other mobs roaming about," Olivia added.
"We can't!" I protested, and everyone's eyes widened in shock, so I quickly backpedaled to explain my point of view. "I mean, the people from my world aren't used to having mobs pop up every night whenever the sun goes down! They wouldn't know what to do! I'd be devastated if I came back to my world and found out someone died because of this, because in my world, death is permanent, just like it is here."
But, seeing everyone's expressions, I sighed and relented;
"But I guess there's no point in fighting it if it's already night time." I paused and scanned the village in front of us before continuing; "There's an Inn over there. Let's go see if they have enough room for all of us."
The gang nodded sleepily, following after me. I knocked on the door to the inn gently, and the owner quickly answered.
"Oh, hello there!" He smiled, waving at us. "You must be new here! I've never seen you around before. What can I do for you?"
"Do you have room for eight?" I asked him.
"Woah!" He gasped, looking past me at all the others. "Are you guys adventurers or something?"
"Yeah, kinda," I admitted. "We need a place to stay for the night."
"Well, why didn't you just say so?" The innkeeper grinned. "Come on in! We certainly have room for all of you!"
We followed him in and he led us behind the stairs to a secret room. He opened the door to let us in. It was a dimly lit large room with eight beds, scattered haphazardly along the walls.
"Usually, I charge insane amounts for the use of this room, but for adventurers, their first stay is always free, so, enjoy!" The innkeeper waved as we headed into the room to unpack our belongings and hunker down for the night.
"We should have someone keeping watch at the door," Jesse decided. "Just in case Enderlord shows up and tries to steal your portal gun while we're all asleep."
"Right," I agreed.
"I'll take first watch," Jesse announced.
"I'll take second watch," Petra added.
"I'll take third watch," I spoke up.
I felt obligated to take a shift, and I was a morning person, so the third and final watch would be easiest for me to take.
"Alright, it's settled then," Jesse concluded, heading for the front door to start keeping watch.
Nothing was officially said, but as the rest of us got into bed, guys just kinda naturally stuck to one side of the room, while the girls took the other. I spotted a pink bed in the dim light, and immediately headed over to claim that one. I sat down on the side of the bed and took off my armor, putting it in the chest beside the bed. I assumed it would be more comfortable to sleep without it. I laid down on the bed and pulled up the covers, turning to sleep on my side. It was a little hard to fall asleep at first, especially once Axel started snoring loudly, but eventually, my eyelids grew heavy, and everything went dark.
...
"Hey, Ashlee," The next thing I knew, I was being woken up by Petra whispering in my ear, gently shaking me. "Ashlee. It's your turn to take watch."
"I'm up, I'm up," I assured her, sitting up quickly. "Just give me a sec."
I stretched my arms and legs and swung my feet over the edge of the bed, standing up and stretching my back.
"I've got it from here," I assured her. "Try to get some more rest now."
Petra nodded, sliding back into her bed as I headed out of the room towards the front door of the inn. I sighed and sat down on the steps, staring out into the surrounding world. Despite the fact that it was still pretty dark, I could see kinda far. The villager's homes were small, but probably just large enough to fit everything they needed. A path was carved through the town. There were several small pens with horses and cows behind some of the homes, with hay bales on either side. There was a garden in the middle of the row of houses, just like every Minecraft village. Some pillars were scattered about as well. The roofs were mostly flat, some ended in triangles though.
Looking back the way we came, there was a gigantic statue of a man wearing a helmet with a feathery Mohawk coming out the top, and kind of a clone trooper hat look to it, except instead of there being black covering the eyes and mouth, that part was left open. He carried a spear and a shield with some sort of insignia that looked like an upside-down v. He wore a cape and a chest plate, and a skirt of sorts, too. He wore heavy looking boots, as well. Greek armor, I was pretty sure, from what I had read in mythological stories. But, the statue on the other side of the port confirmed it. His clothes draped over his body, but left one side of his chest exposed. He was wearing one single flowing garment, that stretched down to his feet, but didn't cover them. He was wearing some type of sandals by the looks of it. He had a head of curly hair, and a medium sized curly beard. His expression was stern.
Uh-oh... this description matched a lot of statuesque adaptations of the Greek god Zeus. Oh no... that meant we were in a Greek mythology world. Oh no... who knows what monsters we might have to face here before finding Enderlord! The Minotaur, Medusa, Chimera, a Sphinx, a cyclops, Hydra, the Nemean Lion, Orthrus, oh, there were just so many of them! All of them were very dangerous. Great, just more terrible situations to put the party in. Brilliant. Some of them had already come very close to dying at times, I couldn't bear the thought if one of them actually—I didn't even dare finish that thought, it was so terrifying.
Just focus on the task at hand, I tried to tell myself. Keeping watch for Enderlord or anything else suspicious and protecting your new friends. Ugh, could I even call them that? I mean, we just met, and then we got thrown into this adventure that wouldn't have even happened if it weren't for my presence in these dimensions, mind you--
I let out a long sigh, staring out into the sky and the stars, the time starting to drag on, seeming to slow to a crawl. I had no real way of keeping track of time out here, but it felt like ages already. Eventually, the sun started to rise, dyeing the sky marvelous shades of purple, pink, orange, and red.
Ah! I should probably get started on that cake! I decided silently. They could start waking up at any minute now!
