"Which way should we go?" Olivia wondered.
"I say we head this way," I decided, pointing behind the houses, beyond this little village by the shore.
"It's as good of a place as any to start," Jesse agreed, taking the lead.
We headed out behind the houses, into the wilderness, wandering through a meadow full of towering grass, barely able to see in front of us. In fact, the grass was so tall, I could barely see where I was going. I just had to trust that the others were still somewhere behind me. I heard a hissing sound somewhere to my right. Only one mob sounded like that. Well, two if you counted the fact that parrots could impersonate anything, but I doubted that's what it was.
"Creepers!" I gasped. "Let's get out of here!"
I started running, and I had to hope that the others weren't far behind me. We probably ran a bit farther than we had to, just to be safe. While we were running, we weren't really watching where we were going, mostly because of the overgrown grass making it impossible to see. Next thing I knew, the ground disappeared beneath me, giving way to a crevasse of sorts. I tried to regain my balance and warn everyone, but I had gone too far, and it was too late. I started to fall. Luckily, the canyon wasn't that deep, and no one got hurt or fell on top of each other. The walls surrounding us were slick, with no vines to climb up. The mini canyon seemed to stretch on infinitely in either direction, so it didn't look like we had many options here. There was a cave entrance a little bit to our left on the cobblestone wall in front of us.
"Well, it looks like we haven't got much of a choice," I sighed. "We've got to go through here and see where this leads us. Hopefully it'll take us out of here."
The cave was completely dark, but I didn't have anything to light it up.
"Anybody got a torch?" Olivia wondered.
Jesse nodded, reaching into his inventory and pulling out a single torch, holding it in his hand.
"Okay, cool," I began. "Jesse, you take the lead. The rest of us will be right behind you."
Jesse nodded and headed into the cave, and the others followed after him. I brought up the rear just to make sure everyone stayed safe. This place turned out to be more than your typical cave. It was a maze of sorts, with several twists and turns and paths to take.
"We should leave a trail of sorts," I decided. "So we know where we've been, just in case one of these paths leads us back or something, so we don't get lost. Anybody have any string?"
"I picked up a few from those spiders we fought earlier," Petra responded.
"I've got some, too," Axel added.
"Me three," Olivia put in.
"I've got some as well," I spoke up. "Everyone, pass all the string you've got up to Petra. She'll lay it down on the ground here so we'll know where we've been and we won't get lost."
Everyone nodded, passing all the string they had up to Petra, who started placing it down on every block she walked on. We swerved around a couple twists and turns, but didn't come across many branching paths, if any. It all seemed to be linear, really, but it still felt better having a path of string that led back to the entrance, just in case.
"I'm out of string," Petra sighed as we rounded yet another corner.
"I could use my ice," I spoke up quickly. "If we see any frozen blocks or blocks covered in snow or frost, we know we'll have been there."
"That could work," Jesse agreed.
"But won't it just melt after a while?" Axel wondered.
"My powers allow me to generate a special kind of snow that never melts," I explained. "Unless it comes into direct contact with fire, which I'm sure it won't. It's better than nothing."
