I turned and headed back inside, still keeping an eye on the outside by looking through the glass windows.
"Oh, hello," The innkeeper noticed me as I approached the front desk again.
"Hi," I began awkwardly. "Do you have a crafting table I could use?"
"Sure thing," He told me. "Right through that door."
He gestured towards a door along the right wall of the entry way.
"Thank you, sir," I thanked him.
I headed through the door to find it led to some sort of kitchen area, with some furnaces(furni?) and a crafting table right next to the door. I placed all the ingredients to craft a cake onto the table, and they formed together. I picked up the cake, looking for somewhere to set it down so everyone could grab some. There were wooden blocks between each of the furncaces like counters. I decided to place the cake there. Looking at it now, as the sun filtered through the window behind me, letting its bright white frosting shine in the morning light, a horrible wave of thoughts struck me.
Cake for breakfast? What was I thinking? Oh, they're gonna think I'm weird. Heheh, if they didn't already. Seriously! What is wrong with me? What kind of crazy person thinks it's a good idea to have cake for breakfast? UGH!
Footsteps approaching from outside broke my train of thought. I instantly became on edge, reaching for my sword as the door started to open, ready to strike if something nasty came through. I let out a sigh of relief and eased up instantly as I saw Soren's face through the door as it opened.
"Soren?" I pressed, a little shocked still. "Uhh, you're up early."
"I usually get up this early to start my research," he explained. "There's a lot of preparation that goes into studying endermen and such."
"Yeah, I'll bet," I agreed, sighing. "Hopefully this will all be over soon, so you can get back to that."
"Say, what's that smell?" He asked me.
"Huh?" At first, I was confused, but then I smelled it, too, the warm, vanilla goodness rising up from behind me. "Oh... I made cake for everyone for breakfast."
"It smells wonderful," Soren grinned. "Don't mind if I do."
He made his way around me and took a slice of the cake for himself, starting to eat it already.
"Wait a minute..." he realized between bites, staring at the cake. "There's only seven slices of cake, and eight of us. Who-?"
"I took some extra wheat and made some bread for myself," I assured him. "It's okay."
"Hello?" A third voice asked from the entryway.
I peeked out the door to see that it was Olivia.
"Oh, good morning, Olivia," I waved to her from the kitchen door.
"Hi, Ashlee," Olivia waved back. "What are you doing over there?"
"Oh, I made cake for everyone for breakfast, uhh, if you want some," I answered truthfully.
"Yeah, sure, I'll take some," Olivia nodded, and I held the door open for her. "Thanks."
"It's the least I could do," I assured her. "So, did you sleep well? Are you ready to tackle whatever this day may have in store for us?"
"Yeah, ready as I'll ever be," Olivia told me, biting into her slice of cake.
"Good," I smiled.
Everything was silent for a little while, until I heard a thunking sound coming from down the hall, seemingly in our room.
"What was that?" Soren wondered.
"I'll go check it out," I offered, cautiously heading back to our room, my hand on my sword, ready to attack any infiltrators I saw.
I pushed open the door slowly, scanning the sunlit room to see no one new was in here, but Lukas was sprawled out on the floor beside his bed, seemingly awake.
"Woah!" I gasped. "Uhh... good morning, Lukas. You okay? Did you sleep well at least?"
"As well as one could possibly sleep with someone snoring so loudly right next to them," Lukas responded, glancing at Axel, who was still fast asleep, snoring louder than ever.
"I'm sorry to hear that," I sighed. "Are you okay?"
I walked over to help him up.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Lukas assured me as I helped him to his feet.
"Say," He began, glancing around the room. "Where are Olivia and Soren?"
"Oh, they're in the kitchen, by the exit," I told him. "I made cake for everyone this morning if you want some."
"Cool, thanks," Lukas thanked me, and the two of us headed back out into the kitchen with the others.
"It was nothing," I told Olivia and Soren.
"Well that's a relief," Soren sighed, continuing to eat his cake hastily.
It was silent again for a bit, then two more pairs of footsteps headed down the hall towards the exit.
"Morning Ivor, Axel," I waved to them as they passed the kitchen door.
"Oh, hey, Ashlee," Axel waved as he noticed me.
"I made some cake for you guys if you want some," I told them without waiting for them to ask.
"Totally," Axel nodded, and I held the door open for him and Ivor as they headed into the kitchen, using a small piece of wood to prop it open for Jesse and Petra when they finally woke up.
Everyone who was already up was just standing idly around the kitchen, eating their cake. As I glanced around at everyone, it was then that I realized I never really got a chance to talk to Ivor all that much and check in with him. I decided now was a good of a time as any. I headed over to him, smiling and waving.
"Hey, Ivor," I began. "How are you doing?"
"Oh, I'm doing wonderful," He replied. "Thanks for the cake, by the way."
"Of course," I responded. "So, uhh, sleep well?"
"Yes, I slept just fine," He told me. "I had the strangest dream, though, where everyone here had turned into an animal. Soren was an ocelot, Olivia was a parrot, Axel was a panda, Petra was a wolf, Lukas was a horse, I was a donkey, Jesse was a pig, and you were a cow."
"That sounds like it really weird," I agreed. "I've had strange dreams like that from time to time, and you just wake up like, what? Why? How did my mind come up with that?"
"Dreams are a mystery sometimes," Ivor shrugged. "Maybe it meant nothing. Maybe it meant everything."
"Haha, yeah," I nodded. "Good talking to you."
"Good talking to you, too," Ivor agreed as he took another bite of his cake.
I still felt hungry, too, and that's when I realized I hadn't even eaten any of my bread yet. Silly me! I started to take a couple bites of one of the loaves I made when Jesse and Petra walked in.
"Oh, hi, Jesse, Petra," I waved to them. "You guys get a good night's sleep?"
"What's going on here?" Jesse responded with his own question.
"Oh, I made cake for you guys," I told him. "There's two slices left for you two."
Jesse cast me a concerned glance.
"Oh, don't worry about me," I assured him, guessing what he was thinking. "I got some extra wheat and made myself some bread, see?"
I held up the half-eaten loaf and started to take another bite while he and Petra grabbed their slices of cake. Once we were all finally done with our breakfast, we headed outside, thanking the innkeeper one more time as we passed the front desk.
