Cold Love

The cold snowy night. It was always a beautiful sight to see. The snow falling from the night sky. The ground was covered in a smooth sheet of white snow. It was pitch-perfect. Nothing could feel better than some good snow. That was how Ness thought, at least. He stared out his window in awe. An urge kicked away inside of his head. He ran off toward his Mom's bedroom. "Mom!!"

"Ugh, Ness, enough with the yelling please," She said with that classic tired mom voice they all seem to have at one point or another.

"Sorry. But can I go out for a walk?"

"A walk?" Ness's Mom looked over at the clock on her TV stand. "It's almost midnight, Ness, it's far too late."

"I know, but it'll be so peaceful out there. Please?" Ness's Mom sat up and rubbed her neck a little.

"Fine, just don't go too far from the neighborhood, and don't be out longer than an hour, got it? Still got school in the morning."

"Thank you, Mom. I love you!!" Ness said loudly as he ran out of her room. She simply collapsed back down in a groan.

Ness got himself ready. Jacket, gloves, scarf, extra pants for that extra padding, etc. He wanted to make sure he wouldn't be suffering from the cold. Only feeling the immense pleasure of the snow. He made sure he had his keys before leaving the house. Taking a cool and swift whiff of the snowy air. "Ahh...what a time to be alive," he said to himself.

The crunching sound the snow made as his foot made contact with it was almost hypnotic. He knew where he was walking toward, and he knew he'd have plenty of time to hear it. But as he turned the corner he saw a horrible sight. It was Lucas, his best friend, sitting out in front of his house. He was clutching his shivering body. He was covered in snow. His skin even seemed to be paler than usual. "Lucas?" Ness said to himself. He ran over, no longer listening to the sweet sound of the crunching snow. "Lucas!!" Lucas shakily looked over at Ness.

"N-N-Ness...h-h-hey..." he said. His voice was so shaky from the cold that he was barely able to speak. The clattering of his teeth was loud enough for Ness to hear from a few feet back.

"What're you doing out here?"

"L-l-locked out..." Ness shook his head and walked over. He took off his jacket, to which he still had a sweater, and draped it over Lucas.

"Why the hell are you locked out? Where's your parents?"

"I-i-i-inside." Lucas clearly had trouble not only speaking but breathing. His eyelids struggled to stay open.

"Have you tried knocking?"

"I-i-it's useless. Th-th-this is...p-p-p-punishment."

"Punishment for what?" Ness wrapped an arm around Lucas. His skin was freezing cold. If he was told he was touching the cold wall, he'd believe that.

"F-forgot my k-keys i-i-inside." Ness shook his head before looking over at the front door.

"Unbelievable." He cleared his throat and forced Lucas to stand. "Come on, I'm getting you out of the cold." Lucas's feet were shaky, he could barely stand. Ness made sure to support him as they walked through the snow. The sound of the crunching was audible, but not what he was focused on. "How long have you been out here?"

"A-an hour."

"Really?"

"I-I-I think? I-I don't have...p-phone."

"That's inside too?" Lucas nodded his head erratically. "Horrible..." Ness said to himself as they continued through the snow. It wasn't long before they made it to Ness's house. And thankfully so, as Lucas didn't seem like he could walk much longer out there. He entered the house with Lucas, making sure to be utterly careful with him as he stepped through the door frame.
