"You can do this," Justin promises, squeezing my shoulder before I get out of the car. When I look in his eyes I really want to believe him. It's one more thing he's really good at. I never would have expected it a year ago but Justin's become like the older brother I always really wanted.
"Just pray I don't throw up," I sigh. He gives a little laugh but then I have to go.
My hands start to shake as I walk through the crowd of kids who are hanging out in front of the school. I keep my head down so no one really notices me until I get to the group of people I'm looking for.
"Oh my god, Sarah!" Celeste shrieks and then it's all over. She comes running to hug me, followed by almost everyone else. Only one person doesn't look excited that I'm here and I knew he wouldn't be. Luke.
"I really need to talk to Luke," I tell them, trying not to be rude but I don't want him to get away. I've been calling him ever since I admitted to Justin and Charlotte that I might be pregnant. He hasn't returned a single one of my calls or texts so now I'm doing the only thing I can.
"I don't want to talk to you," he says, loud enough for everyone to hear.
"Don't make me do this the hard way," I beg him. "Just give me a second."
"There's nothing you can say, Sarah," Luke says. "You told me you were leaving and then you didn't leave. I'm done with your games."
"I don't want to talk about that," I don't feel like explaining to everyone that I did go back to Utah but I only lasted 36 hours. "Please, Luke."
"Okay, I'm listening," he shrugs. I look at everyone standing around us. He obviously isn't going to move so I can do this in private.
"Can we have some space?" I ask everyone.
"No, don't go anywhere," Luke insists.
"Don't be a dick," I protest.
"You're nothing but a manipulative bitch," Luke says. "And now I'm leaving," he turns to go. I can't think fast enough. My eyes are stinging, like I've been hit. The last thing I want to do is go after him but I do.
"Luke," I know he's not going to turn around. "Look, you can be done with me, but I have to tell you something."
"You really don't know when to give up," he shakes his head.
"I don't want anything from you, Luke, but I thought you should know," I have to fight to catch my breath. He's not running but his legs are a lot longer than mine and I'm not in good shape anymore. "I'm pregnant."
"I don't believe you," Luke barely turns his head to say it. I don't know what else I can say to him. I've said what I have to so I stop following him and go back to Justin's car.
"Well?" Justin asks.
"He doesn't believe me," I shrug.
"Of course not," Justin sighs. "He'll be sorry."
"He hates me," I slouch down lower in my seat.
"I don't know, Sarah, he's probably pretty angry right now," Justin says. "Give him some time."
"I don't care if he's angry," I protest. "It's whatever, I don't need him I just wanted him to know he might have a baby. It's done."
"No, you definitely don't need him if he's gonna be a dick," Justin makes a face and starts driving. "I mean you've done all you can do now."
"Pretty much," I shrug. "Why is this my life?" I sigh.
"It's not as bad as it seems," Justin says. It's so easy for him to say that. This isn't happening to him.
