I Will Follow You Into The Dark- Death Cab For Cutie

Love of mine, someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding lights or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark

Akashi held your hand tightly, his eyes glued to the monitor beside you, wires hooked up this way and that, all leading from you to the machine that ensured you were still alive.

He had sat by your bedside for months, giving you encouragement while you were awake and crying silently over your exhausted, pale body as you slept for long hours because honestly, that was the only thing you could do before you...

No, he couldn't bring himself to say that. Not yet. It hasn't happened yet so there was absolutely no reason to use it...

If Heaven had Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the 'No's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your souls embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

He promised himself that you wouldn't have to go alone, that you wouldn't have to go with the fear and concern of what would become of him. He fully intended to go with you but he's never admit that, especially not in front of you because he knew what you would say.

"No, Seijuro" you'd scold him with a frown. "You can't possibly be considering doing such a thing!"

You'd be bewildered by his plan and would more than likely seek the help of the last person he'd want it from: his father. But this was the only person you could think of in your most fragile state and Akashi was honestly scaring you out of your wits with all of his talk of 'being by your side when you finally depart'.

Which is exactly why he kept it a secret.

You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
'Cause we'll hold each other soon
In the blackest of rooms

Often times, as he sat by you in the middle of the night, he thought back on the trips you had made around the world while he gazed down at your sickly yet still lovely face, illuminated by the dim lit shining behind him.

The many business trips he had to make ended up going from a two day event to a week and a half almost every time. You often begged him to stay just a bit longer, convincing him that there were several different things that you could both do that would be both fun and time consuming. Deep in his heart, though he'd never admit it, you never really did have to push to stay that much. He was always glad to spend time with you and he would be willing to do next to everything to make you happy and evoke a smile or laugh, sometimes both.

If Heaven had Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the 'No's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your souls embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

His head dipped slightly, eye lids heavy with fatigue. A low yawn escaped him and he let go of your hand to cover his mouth. With his eyes closed, he could almost picture you, healthy enough to get out of bed and take long walks with him in the evening. The thought was sweet and it dragged him down, into the recesses of his drained mind and plunged his body into a long coming sleep.

You woke up, heart beating slower than usual. You reached out for Akashi, looking down to find him resting his head on the white bedsheets beside your aching hip. Your chest swelled, staring down at your husband, his red locks falling gently into his peaceful sleeping face. He deserved rest; seeing how he was always up and around to take care of your needs. But this was it. Soon he'd have nothing to worry about...

Your frail fingers found their way to Akashi's head, running them through his red hair slowly, softly to the point where he didn't stir from your touch in the slightest.

"Thank you, Akashi Seijuro..." you whispered, lips curled into a small smile. "I'm so sorry, but I have to leave now. Don't fret. Live life for me, please. Live life..."

You drew in one last labored breath and forced in out, closing your clouded (e/c) eyes...

"(F/n)... (F/n)!" Akashi screamed, picking up your cold, limp hand and squeezing it as if the pressure would squish the life back into you.

"Damn it" he said through gritted teeth, holding your hand to his forehead as he bowed his head, allowing the tears to slip. "I shouldn't have slept. I should have fought to stay up... I let you down, (F/n). I'm sorry."

He swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat and stood up, rage toward no one and everyone at the same time racing through his veins. He picked up a vase full of slowly dying flowers and threw it at the wall, watching as it shattered into multiple shards. He crouched down on the ground, slapping his hands to the side of his head, covering his ears.

"Damn it, damn it, damn it!" he shouted, tears streaming down his face. "First my mother, now you. Why?!"

He looked up toward the ceiling and after awhile, he calmed down, taking shaky breaths before he called in one of his servants to help take your body away.

Afterwards, he stayed in his study for two days, speaking to no one and not once coming out to eat. He was heartbroken but after those two days, he realized that you would have wanted him to continue, not lock himself up in his study without any human interaction whatsoever.

That day he left his study and went for a walk, one of the things he longed to do while you had been sick. He wanted to walk with you, he never expected his first time out of the house would be one where you weren't by his side. Where you couldn't be by his side.

The setting sun blinded him as he walked down the weathered sidewalk, staring down at the weeds and flowers poking up through the cracks in the white cement. The wind blew chilly air across his already frigid body. Stuffing his hands deep into his pockets, he lifted his head to the horizon.

The dying sun slipped beneath the surface of the sky, leaving him alone to the coming darkness. He sighed and closed his eyes, breathing in the air around him that still carried the faint scent of you. He was ready. Not to let you go completely but to move on and live on for the both of you.

"Thank you, (F/n). I will respect and honor your wishes..." he whispered into the wind, carrying his voice a bit farther before drowning it out within itself.
