Trust Me

Scott is just pulling on his jacket, heading out of the surgery doors and just as he’s about to switch all the lights off, the front door to the practice suddenly swings open. He stops, looks up to see thee Laura Hale.

He’s only ever seen her from afar, around town, here and there, but she’s even more stunning up close in person. Long straight and shiny hair that’s as black as midnight. Thin, but muscled and curved in all the right places. Skin even more pale than Stiles’, but even more glowing. Eyes as green as...the ocean.

Scott doesn’t have time to think about why those eyes look so familiar to him. Not while his own eyes are shamelessly trailing up and down her lean curves under that leather jacket. And he only stops himself, because his eyes lift back to hers and he sees her smirking amusedly.

“Wha–uhh...” Scott quickly clears his throat and slaps on a friendly smile (while ignoring his heated cheeks as best he can.) “How can I help you, Miss Hale?”

Laura chuckles, crosses her arms loosely over her chest as she tells him, “Well, for starters, you can stop being so formal.” She takes a small step closer, regarding him with a small, but impressed smile. “I know who you are, Scott McCall. They call you the fox who can’t be corrupted.”

“They??” Scott arches a brow, looks confused.

Laura smirks at him, arches a challenging brow back. “Like you don’t already know. You’re not as dumb as you make everyone believe.”

Scott narrows his eyes, feeling slightly uneasy about her even being here now. Calmly, but firmly, he asks, “What did you come here for?”

Laura chuckles. “Relax. I’m not here for a fight.” She waves a dismissive hand.

Scott simply stays quiet. He simply lets her do the talking, lets her reveal herself first.

He watches as she wanders around the waiting area, watches her glance around with barely mild interest. He sees her nose twitching and keeps his pulse calm as he notes a flicker of recognition flash passed her stunning features.

Laura turns back around to face him. She tilts her head, staring curiously at him before calmly asking, “Do you know where my brother is right now?”

Scott takes a moment, making sure his pulse stays in check. “No.” Scott says, voice steady, eyes never leaving hers, “I’ve never met your brother.”

Laura nods in acceptance, then, just as calmly she’s asking him, “Then, why exactly is it that I can smell traces of his blood right here in this very building?”

Scott simply gives her a slow and rather unbothered shrug.

Laura eyes him carefully. “Are you protecting him?”

“What?” Now, Scott really is confused. “I told you; I’ve never met him.”

“Well–“ Laura huffs loudly, her cool surface suddenly broken by frustration (and Scott smells a little fear–the desperate kind.) “If he’s not here, then...”

Finally, Scott feels himself relax, even feels a little sympathy for her. He edges slowly closer, keeping his hands still at his sides to show he’s no threat to her.

“You’re talking about Derek, right?”

He nods when she nods.

“Look, I’m guessing you already know everything about every single person that lives in this town...”

He chuckles and nods when she smiles sheepishly.

Scott sighs, shoves his keys into his pocket and says, “Then, you know you can trust me.”

Scott hands her the steaming mug of coffee before taking the seat to her left.

“Thanks.” Laura mumbles, shoots him a small but grateful smile.

Scott smiles back at her–all but fighting to grin like a big dope (who’s already got a stupid crush...) He schools his pulse before it even has a chance to flicker.

Laura simply tells him, “All we know is that Derek disappeared in the middle of the night, two full moons ago, and we haven’t seen, heard, or even caught a whiff of him ever since. For a while before that, six or seven months maybe, he started acting real secretive and shifty, like he couldn’t wait to go somewhere. I thought that maybe he had a girlfriend–he’s always real private about that kinda stuff. But...I checked his room, I asked everybody that knows him, and absolutely nothing came up. No one has seen him for the last two months, either, and the last time they did see him, they all told me pretty much the same thing I just told you.”

“Well, I know you, your brother and your mom are the only ones of your pack that can fully shift, and I’ve seen no wolves around here. As for the blood thing, I got loads of supernatural buddies that have a spare key for this place, in case of emergencies. But I promise, I’ll put out the word to them and let you know if any of them know anything.”

He knew those ocean green eyes felt familiar to him. I knew that wolf was trouble! Goddamn it, Stiles!

Scott feels like a piece of shit for lying. (Just because lying like the trickster fox he really is, is something that he excels at, doesn’t mean he enjoys doing it. But Stiles is his family. Not Laura. And not Derek. And he will keep her name out of his mouth and out the wolves ears for at least as long until he knows she’s safe.)

The she wolf thankfully seems to believe him, and Scott can’t help himself. Can’t help that other side of his nature. He wants to help her.

So, he will...

(He just doesn’t know how yet.)
