Shen Wei hurried back into the cave, it was too cold outside to leave Yunlan on his own for very long, but they needed more wood for the fire to keep the heat above freezing. Once the entrance was sealed, inside was unbelievably warm, the walls held the heat and Wei thought that the mountain itself was helping Yunlan to be comfortable in his last few days. This was his mountain centuries ago and it never forgot him, and now it was looking after another one of the descendants. Yunlan and Wei never regretted the decision to move here and spend the last of their time together. Yunlan was old and life's injuries had caught up with him as they do when someone ages. Wei could keep his pain at bay but couldn't prolong his life or stop the natural process, so every minute was precious and it was almost his time to go.

"Xaio Wei, do something for me and put my watch and whip on the shelf of rock over at the back of the cave, safe and sound for the next one to find it, the mountain will look after them until then."

Wei placed both items together where Yunlan had asked, and he immediately returned to his side and held him while he released a small amount of healing power to stop any pain Yunlan might be feeling.

"Have you decided Xaio Wei, the choice has always been yours, I will be at peace knowing it's what you want."

"A-Lan, my love, I am staying. I will wait and meet you when you return. Coming here helped me to decide and I am content knowing that you will come back to me and I look forward to that day."

Yunlan smiled as he stared into Wei's eyes for the last time, looking at the love shown in his face. Wei never cried as he watched Yunlan slip away, and he wondered what kind of life he would be leading when they next met. He spoke to the mountain, asking it to take Yunlan's remains and look after him, and when he left the cave, he never looked back but walked forward to prepare himself to begin again. He remained on the mountain for a while just to enjoy the feeling of Yunlan's spirit being here and allowing himself time to grieve before he returned to the city to wait and watch.

Chapter One.

The weather had turned nasty and this inexperienced hiker only went as far as the plateau, at least he had the sense not to go any further, inform his contacts where he was and wore warm clothing, along with having a full charge on his phone. Mount Kunlun didn't have many visitors after the seasons had changed and that's partly why he had chosen now to explore the area, the other reason was his father who had died recently. He had insisted to the point of making him promise to visit the mountain at least once after his death, so that's what he was doing now. He would probably never come back.

He had found shelter in a cave which seemed safe enough inside and it looked as though others had done the same, because they had left some items behind. Not litter or rubbish, things that would be of use to a more qualified and seasoned hiker than himself, and had a look for anything that he could use for heat. But burning a fire in here might not be a good idea, so it was going to be a cold night. Thankfully he was well wrapped up and the cave walls kept the wind chill out.
