"Alright I'm here, why bring me here, what did you want me to see?" He asked, hearing his own voice echoing in the empty room followed by a small flash of light which caught his eye on the third floor, and he teleported to look for the source.
There were several new paintings but the Syn was gone which was a surprise but he could guess where it would be and he looked at the replacement. It was a picture of him sitting at the table in the window in his favourite café with Yunlan having tea and smiling. In the bottom right corner was a tiny black dot almost looking like a mistake, maybe the artist's brush had dripped, except, this artist didn't make mistakes, and he shivered before he moved on.
The next portrait was of his cottage and it looked beautiful with a garden full of flowers while a black cat sat in the sun. He couldn't see anything to give him concern over this image. Obviously the cat was Daqing and Yunlan loved gardening, therefore everything looked exactly as he had dreamt, summer flowers, blue sky, warm sunshine, and garden chairs beside a table with two drinks, placed on black napkins. He knew that there was a message aimed at him but his subconscious mind was blocking it out, and he could hear Yunlan talking to him, "Let it go, denial."
When Shen Wei moved on to the next painting, someone had placed a seat in front of it, 'alright' he thought, I'll sit down first before I look and then he gasped when he saw Yunlan, his Yunlan. He was standing posing for the picture, with Daqing the cat at his feet, the whip secured to his right arm, and the watch on his left. His eyes shone like rich dark diamonds and his smile lit up his face but if you looked closely, there was a small tear which had formed at the outer corner of his left eye making his smile look ambiguous, fooling the normal person into thinking it was joy when Shen Wei realised that it was forced, to hide the real emotion behind it. Then he spotted the black mark again only larger, painted into the bottom right corner like a handkerchief with Wei's mask lying on top and he slowly began to realise the meaning behind it.
Yunlan looked well and relatively young but that didn't mean anything. Wei was over 200 and looked 30. The spirit might be able to do the same for Yunlan, he didn't know none of his predecessors had been alive when they took over the role of carer for the Black Robe Spirit but they had all died first before Wei, and then it hit him why he was given a seat to sit down. He was going to leave Yunlan first, and he felt the tears begin to flow, silently while he let it sink into his emotions.
There were no more paintings in the library anywhere, they had all been removed, it was a clean slate which was good, because the students would have access to this library at some point and it would be better if some things remained a mystery but Shen Wei stayed seated as he asked the questions, not even sure if he would get an answer.
"When will it happen? How long do I have? Will there be any more paintings? And who are you?"
There was no drama when the soft voice answered him and he never recognised it, telling him that he still had quite a few years ahead of him to prepare Yunlan for the change, because it was going to be difficult living with another voice in his head that might talk to him now and again. He would not be given Black Robe's strength or gifts but he would always be protected until the time came to release the spirit, giving it to the next descendant and then he could rest.
