Missie sat at the table, watching the candle burn. It had been a couple weeks since Kathleen's funeral. She felt numb. It was like she lost her family all over again as a little girl. She brushed her tears away as Billy walked in. It was his family he lost, not hers.
"What do we do now?" She whispered.
The bank had contacted them saying they were taking the house back.
"I don't know," he sighed.
He took off his cardigan she made him and hung it up.
"We can't stay here," he said.
"Where do we go?"
"Somewhere else. Anywhere. Just not here."
She slowly nodded. She wondered how they could afford it, but they couldn't. Not a room for each of them and no one would give them a room together unless she was branded a harlot.
Was he going to abandon her?
"Billy-" she slowly started but he was quickly kneeling down beside her.
"I know I have nothing, and no preacher will let me marry you with no way to provide for you. But I promised I'd marry you. You're all I have left, I can't leave you. I won't. I keep waiting for the right time, but every time I think I can, something happens, and I don't want to wait any longer."
She gently brushed her fingers through his curls. "Who needs a preacher to be married? Isn't God here with us now?"
Billy stood up. "Dontcha want a proper wedding?"
"I don't care, as long as it's you I'm marrying."
He softly smiled, taking her hands.
"Then I, Henry McCarty take thee, Missie Bell, before God, as my wife, to have and to cherish, I'll take no other from this day forth until death do us part."
Billy pulled his mother's ring out of his pocket and slid it on her finger.
"And I, Missie Bell take thee, Henry McCarty, before God, as my husband, to have and to cherish, I'll take no other from this day forth until death do us part."
Missie unclasped her mother's locker and clasped it around his neck.
"Are you sure?" He whispered.
She nodded. "My most prized possession is you now. May you wear that and remember my love for you."
He gently cupped her face before he kissed her. She only pulled away to catch her breath, smiling as she looked up at him. He softly kissed her smile.
"I'm finally Mrs. Billy McCarty," she smiled, looking down at her ring.
"One day I'll buy you a diamond."
"This is perfect, I don't need anything else. I have all I want in life and that is to be beside you."
Billy sighed, wrapping his arms around her, pressing his forehead to hers. She smiled before she squealed as he quickly picked her up, one arm around her waist and the other under her knees. He carried her to her bedroom, over the threshold before he set her down to kiss her.
She cupped his face as he deepened the kiss, his hands squeezing her waist.
"Are you scared?" He asked, brushing her loose strands behind her ear.
She shook her head. "I could never be scared to be with you Billy. I'm just a little nervous is all," she admitted.
"I'll take good care of you, I promise."
